When Vera was reunited with The Grand in 2022

Vera Guest was certainly a VIP for afternoon tea at The Grand today, December 8th 2022 at the grand age of 94.

At Qlocal and Southportnews group recently ran a competition to win afternoon tea at The Grand but when we saw one of the entries was 'I would take my mum as she worked there in the 1940's' we got in touch. The Grand who immediately said they would invite them anyway.

Vera started work at The Grand in the 1940's when it was a cinema and she started as an usherette aged just 15 before moving to the box office. She worked there throughout World War II and recalled many US servicemen would often come to the cinema as it was then.

She recalled fond memories of where the box office was located, how the queues would go all the way outside. When asked who her favourite movie stars were, she mentioned "Clark Gable, Sophia Loren, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers".

Her daughter Shirley said "Mum says that she has had a wonderful afternoon and is still reminiscing her time in The Grand from the early 40’s and the staircase took you up to a big cafe".

It was an absolute pleasure to meet Vera that day with her daughter and son in law.

Andrew Brown also covered this in the Southport Visiter paper much to Vera's delight.
