Seems perverse Esther Rantzen leading the call for legalised assisted dying
in the UK when her amazing Child Line and Silver Line would have helped so many suicidal callers to seek help.

End of life care should be helped with pain relief management to bring comfort at dignity without the need for more drastic measures.

A very emotive subject. I do have sympathy for those with terminal illnesses whose quality of life has deteriorated to such an extent that they should be given the right to end their suffering. Some very stringent restrictions would have to be in place and I feel civilised society should allow for this.
However, there has been a short documentary on BBC news last night regarding Canada’s expansion of its assisted dying laws to allow those with mental illness to have the right to end their lives. It was well made and very thought provoking with both sides giving a very strong argument for and against. Personally, I feel that this expansion is taking things way beyond anything I’m comfortable with. The law has been delayed again for a couple of years but looks like it will be passed in the not too distant future. I think the program will be repeated and would recommend watching it.

If passed it would just be another trip for lawyers to argue court cases.

Whether it is religious or family appeals or pro life or religious charities.

Most of all I fear it would not make dying any easier for those who choose it or those left behind.

Consider this?
An asylum seeker,migrant or Brit without funds to pay for assisted dying would only be able to afford if paid for out of the public purse.

Kind of split on this subject.

It makes sense for those at the end of life to have a merciful release from pain.

But I'm concerned about those that might wish to take advantage of it. Not even sure how, just that it doesn't sit right somehow.

I have known too many people facing terminal illness still do never come across anyone wishing Assisted dying.Hoping that is mostly due to good medical care relieving pain symptoms and family support.

I don't think supporting assisted death and talking people out of suicide are incompatible.

Many of the people helped by Rantzen's services were in abusive situations, depression and loneliness. They try to help them move on from what may be making life seem worthless, to something better.

That's different from people in serious pain, or living without dignity or quality of life that they know cannot change.

I do wonder though , how (a) you stop people being bullied into it; or (b) people doing it to make others' lives easier.

I suspect it happens now and it is overlooked. I have certainly heard of a GP being asked to provide a terminal dose of medication and saying he couldn't do that. But prescribing a painkiller and saying to be careful with the dose because too mugh could be fatal.

Understandable, except Esther Ransom has stage four lung cancer - not a pleasant disease.

Assisted Dying should only be legal if it is the last resort of someone who is suffering such great pain that a quality of life is impossible. It should not be allowed to those who have a whim.
