Near Miss of the Day 904: Driver ordered to pay £1,300 and gets six penalty points for cyclist close pass
A driver of a company-branded vehicle (Sam Hurst Construction) who close passed a cyclist in Ainsdale - almost hitting the rider with the trailer the van was towing at the time - has been fined £700, ordered to pay more than £600 in costs and received six penalty points.
The road.cc reader who filmed the driving reported it to Merseyside Police in July last year and was informed in March that the case had gone to court, the driver being fined £700, ordered to pay court costs of £350, and a £288 victim surcharge, the total sum coming to £1,338, as well as their driving licence receiving six penalty points.
"This close pass happened in July last year near to Southport," the road.cc reader explained.
"I'd forgotten all about it until I received an email from Merseyside Police about the verdict from the court case in March of this year.
*Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that it's decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site.
"One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on," said a cc spokesman.
If you’ve caught on camera a close encounter of the uncomfortable kind with another road user that you’d like to share with the wider cycling community please send it to info@road.cc(link is external)
Good.
Lessons will be learned the hard way if drivers can’t follow the rules.
This guy will also have increased insurance premiums. All because he thought he ruled the road.

The world can do certainly without that type of driving......Btw, I came across the 'Pass Pixie' site recently, after watching a short video about these novel items. The rider in the vid with one on the back of his cycling jersey, was given good clearance by all who overtook him!

Unfortunately some drivers can't wait. if there's not enough space to pass a cyclist (or any other road user) then hold back until there is space and then pass.

Indeed, impatience is one reason for close passes. Another is the brain-dead type, who though not in a big hurry to get anywhere, sails straight past in a dream as if the cyclist doesn't exist.

Wow, fancy that. Trying to divert an article about dangerous driving around to cyclists.
Maybe do a proper review of the numbers to understand exactly where the most prolific danger comes from.
Btw, the odd few extra collisions of cyclists with pedestrians is far less critical than a collision of a car against a ped. Be realistic.

"if drivers can't follow the rules" everyone should follow the rules and it is patently obvious to everyone that cyclists disregard the rules.
