Midweek Visitor — revive interest in Town Deal Fund after weeks of lockdown
The current Midweek Visitor features a full page aimed at reviving some popular interest in the Town Deal Fund — potentially £25 million. It should be noted by all that the money is not a fait accompli. There is a bidding process for which a plan is being devised. The plan will compliment the existing Southport Development Framework developed with Sefton Council’s lead consultants Nexus and Broadway Malyan.
I didn't follow the Q Local Southport forum in October 2016 when the Framework was published, but I recall it received (at best) mixed reviews. I suspect regular contributors, here, have views on that document.
Let's hope the Town Deal Plan is worthy of a better reception.

The Tulketh Street area is identified in Southport's Development Framework
Southport Development Framework — Appendix 1: Development Opportunities
Tulketh Street is an area of the town centre that historically included a mix of retail (including a former supermarket) and other town centre related uses. The area adjoins a key gateway to the town (the railway station) and accommodates an ageing multi-storey car park and two Council owned surface level car parks and a number of vacant commercial properties. The area fronts onto Chapel Street, a busy and successful shopping street. It also adjoins local independent businesses on the rest of Tulketh Street and popular Wesley Street. The site area falls wholly within the town centre boundary (Southport Central Area). A large proportion of the site is also defined as Primary Retail Frontage so a proposal for retail uses and other main town centre uses would be consistent with current planning policy
…This area is viewed as having long term development potential, which would include a mix of town centre uses, improved environment around the station and an enhanced gateway role. Comprehensive redevelopment of the site is unlikely to be possible in the short to medium term given multiple ownerships and recent acquisition by Sports Direct.
If developer interest can be harnessed, the Council will actively consider the role, use and potential disposal of its property assets to facilitate the creation of a viable scheme and business case. A development brief could be prepared to promote this area of the town to investors.

Various posters' suggestions of moving Southport station back are non-starters. The new Merseyrail electric trains are longer than the existing ones....and won't fit in the existing platforms...so they need more space, not less!
What would be much more beneficial, from both road and rail use, is the redevelopment of Kew Park and Ride to incorporate a railway station. I originally proposed this before it was built!
I took part in a local consultation meeting with Sefton's highway engineers, who showed their proposed site for the Park and Ride, and asked for comments. I said that it wouldn't prove popular because it would just take drivers off the slow, congested roads into town, put them on buses, which would then sit in the traffic jams on the same congested roads. However, if drivers transferred to trains at a purpose built station on the adjacent railway embankment, then they would be in town within minutes.
It was so long ago that Steamport was open: I suggested that a heritage diesel railcar or two (or even a steam train) could have run a shuttle service into Southport....and maybe turned into a tourist attraction in their own right. The engineers from Sefton looked at me as though I'd grown two heads! I think this was because they were highway engineers....they didn't do railways.
I didn't bother with my other suggestion (talking of reopening railway curves), which was to reinstate the Eastern side of the 'Southport Triangle' (joining the Manchester line to the Liverpool line) so that trains could run from Kew to say Hillside (for the Open Golf) without having to reverse at Southport station.

Regarding Snig's foot post #80:
I believe I am alone in advocating relocating the rail passenger platforms. If contributions to this thread are a useful guide, then the consensus must be that moving the platforms 1500 feet away from Chapel Street would discourage visitors arriving by rail — presumably owing to being that much further from Lord Street and the sea.
I believe there is a positive solution to this conjecture. Southport would benefit by connecting all its visitor attractions by means of a 21st century transport solution, given that the end of the pier is already one mile from the current rail platforms. My suggestions have included a fleet of fully autonomous vehicles. But admittedly, I am alone.
As happens, the length of new trains would make this an appropriate time to reconfigure the Merseyrail network. The opportunity of completing a rail loop — Liverpool, Southport, Ormskirk, Liverpool — would I believe, benefit this town.

That cannot ever happen, at least not with current Merseyrail rolling stock. Because the Govt will no longer give permission for any new third-rail infrastructure.

It probably CAN because the new Merseyrail trains have batteries, and were specified that way so they could run services beyond the third-rail system.
