An in-depth biography of Barbara Castle, one of the most important figures of Labour politics in the 20th century. It looks at both the pioneering woman politician and the woman behind the political mask.

"This year (2016) marks the centenary of Harold Wilson’s birth, the fiftieth anniversary of his most impressive general election victory and forty years since his dramatic resignation as Prime Minister.

He was one of the longest-serving premiers of the twentieth century, having won a staggering four general elections, yet, despite this monumental record, his place in Labour’s history remains somewhat ambiguous.

By the end of his two periods in power, both the left and right of the party were highly critical of Wilson – the former regarding him as a traitor to socialism, the latter as contributing directly to British decline.

With contributions from leading experts in the fields of political study, and from Wilson’s own contemporaries, this remarkable new study offers a timely and wide-ranging reappraisal of one of the giants of twentieth-century politics, examining the context within which he operated, his approach to leadership and responses to changing social and economic norms, the successes and failure of his policies, and how he was viewed by peers from across the political spectrum. Finally, it examines the overall impact of Harold Wilson on the development of British politics."

Orwell said "If there is hope, it lies in the proles." Whilst champagne socialists see diversity idealised at university, the common folk experience it first hand in their neighbour hoods.

Thumbs up The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem, 2nd revised edition

Benny Morris' The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem was published in 1988. Its startling revelations about how and why 700,000 Palestinians left their homes and became refugees during the Arab-Israeli war in 1948 undermined traditional interpretations as to whether they left voluntarily or were expelled as part of a systematic plan. This book represents a revised edition of the earlier work, compiled on the basis of newly-opened Israeli military archives. While the focus remains the 1948 war and the analysis of the Palestinian exodus, the new material contains more information about what happened in Jerusalem, Jaffa and Haifa, and how events there led to the collapse of Palestinian urban society. It also sheds light on the battles and atrocities that resulted in the disintegration of rural communities. The story is a harrowing one. The refugees now number four million and their existence remains a major obstacle to peace.

UNRWA says it is 5 million now.

    https://www.unrwa.org/palestine-refugees

1948 neighbouring Arab States attacked Israel yet over the years all Arab countries with UNRWA never gave refugees citizenship hence the displaced persons figure is now 5 million descendants from 700,000.

    UNRWA is a racist endeavour.

This book is designed as a timely analysis of the rise of post-modern conservatism in many Western countries across the globe. It provides a theoretical overview of post-modernism, why post-modern conservatism emerged, what distinguishes it from other variants of conservatism and differing political doctrines, and how post-modern conservatism governs in practice. First developing a unique genealogy of conservative thought, arguing that the historicist and irrationalist strains of conservatism were ripe for mutation into post-modern form under the right social and cultural conditions, then providing a new unique theoretical framework to describe the conditions for the emergence of post-modern conservatism, The Rise of Post-modern Conservatism applies its theoretical framework to a concrete analysis of the politics of the day. Ultimately, it aims to help us understand the emergence and rise of identity oriented alt right movements and their “populist” spokesmen particularly in the United States, the United Kingdom, Hungary, Poland, and now Italy.

David Cameron’s sudden resignation unleashed a leadership contest like no other – and saw the showier rivals for his crown fall one by one with dizzying speed. So how did the daughter of an Oxfordshire vicar rise to the top job with such ease? In this fascinating biography, Rosa Prince explores the self-styled unflashy politician whose commitment to public service was instilled in her from childhood.

On Christmas Day 1991 Mikhail Gorbachev resigned as president of the Soviet Union. By the next day the USSR was officially no more and the USA had emerged as the world’s sole superpower. Award-winning historian Serhii Plokhy presents a page-turning account of the preceding five months of drama, filled with failed coups d’état and political intrigue.

Honing in on this previously disregarded but crucial period and using recently declassified documents and original interviews with key participants, he shatters the established myths of 1991 and presents a bold new interpretation of the Soviet Union’s final months. Plokhy argues that contrary to the triumphalist Western narrative, George H. W. Bush desperately wanted to preserve the Soviet Union and keep Gorbachev in power, and that it was Ukraine and not the US that played the key role in the collapse of the Soviet Union. The consequences of those five months and the myth-making that has since surrounded them are still being felt in Crimea, Russia, the US, and Europe today.
With its spellbinding narrative and strikingly fresh perspective, The Last Empire is the essential account of one of the most important watershed periods in world history, and is indispensable reading for anyone seeking to make sense of international politics today.

    _________Reviews_________

‘Serhii Plokhy’s great achievement in this wonderfully well-written account is to show that much of the triumphalist transatlantic view of the Soviet collapse is historiographical manure… The author explains as no one in English has until now, just how central Ukraine was to the viability of any sort of Soviet bloc… it’s bracing and timely… well worth reading’
    —The Times

'A poignantly accurate examination of the last four months in the existence of the USSR...a grippingly captivating story'. — International Affairs

‘Fascinating and readable… the cast is terrific… Beautifully written’
    — Sunday Telegraph, five star review

‘Fine-grained, closely reported [and] highly readable’
    — FT

Not a book on this occasion …

    …but a flick on Film4, yesterday evening

Slightly perplexing at the outset, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is one of those cinematic products that cause me to marvel at the creative talents sometimes evident in that industry.

The screenplay is adapted, or more accurately perhaps fictionalized from an article appearing in Esquire magazine [November, 1998].

Tom Hanks & Matthew Rhys (from the film); plus Esquire's cover featuring Tom Junod's article

Perhaps familiarity with MISTER ROGERS' NEIGHBORHOOD, a television program familiar to most Americans of a certain age, helps a viewer appreciate the curious style of this film a little quicker. However even without that familiarity, its human interest and philosophical content soon override the film's [& Mister Rogers'] somewhat unique eccentricity.

Screened on Film4 on Sunday evening, I expect it will show up in the listings again soon. I recommend it.

Everything is done by Tom Hanks particularly well and accurate from his mannerisms to the red cardigan that’s still in an American museum

The article on that link to the Esquire magazine is a pure treat .

Volodymyr Zelensky — Servant of the People

A short, readable and very up-to-date account of Volodymyr Zelensky's career as an actor /comedian become President of Ukraine, this biography by Steven Derix with Marina Shelkunova is available from Sefton's library service.

A few interesting details from this book include details of Zelensky's early life, a brief part of which was spent in Mongolia, but also Kryvyi Rih in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast where because an open-cast iron ore mine the inhabitants breathed red dust. Evidently, Zelensky's first language was Russian and though he learned Ukrainian at school, it wasn't until he engaged in politics that he felt it useful to improve the latter.

His comedy troupe Kvartal 95 was very popular in Russia, appearing on Russian television and touring extensively there.
Perhaps the most interesting details deal with Soviet era and post-Soviet endemic corruption embedded in the culture of both countries. So much so in fact that prior to Putin's invasion of Ukraine, President Zelensky was frequently called-out by the EU and international observers for exceptional measures he was obliged to make in order to fulfil his promise to rid Ukraine of its corruption and eventually, hopefully its poverty.

Well, I'm currently listening to this - The Diary of a Secret Tory MP.

I know some forum members have problems with satire, but this book is entirely true. I have had to make sure I'm not eating or drinking anything while listening, otherwise I'd have food and drink all over the place.

I keep having to rewind and play some sentences again.

    Priceless.
