Can anyone explain to me why so many cars now are showing a white rear number plate?

Incorrect plates are common, but this is a new level of stupidity. Surely whoever makes them for the driver tells them they are not compliant?

Well - 'cos they are numpties and can get done! Law says that it is illegal to show a white light at the rear of a car, this includes reflectors.

I was behind a car with white rear plates yesterday and did wonder if it was legal

Crap plates, have noticed many and they all appear to be from the same registration time period.

There are quite a lot of them, Looks like an easy pull for the police to check over your car T.B.H.


There was a taxi next door, and they are not the same as the front plates, So I'm guessing the have no UV protection and the sun has washed the yellow out of them?

It's not just the colour but spacing and font, some are unreadable/decipherable!

Plate size, font style and size and spacing are all now clearly laid out by law as well as background being reflective white front and yellow rear. Black plates with silver letters / numbers are only legal on vehicles registered prior to 1973.

Any deviation from the above leaves you likely to be pulled over by the police, especially if the police ANPR cameras can’t read them.
I’ve seen a few what appears to be white rear plates, but it could be that they have reacted to the suns UV rays.

Another New “trend” with number plates (also illegal) is to use tinted Perspex instead of clear.

To keep this plain & simple - there was a fault with the production of the yellow backplates in 2017.

Cars which had number plates made using these backplates have seen the yellow colour fade away - caused by a fault in the manufacture of the coloured backplates. Simply put, it means that the sun's rays literally bleach the colour from the number plates - making them appear white.

It was a genuine manufacturing error when the coloured plastic backplates were made. The Bestplate platemaking franchise appear to have had the majority of these faulty items.

People go to enormous trouble spacing the characters, often illegally; adding spurious black or yellow screw heads which they think ( for example) makes an E look like a C.

Most of the time for me it transmits an insecure ego that you have to do this because you think it will impress people.

The only genuinely humorous one I have ever seen was belonged to a sales person for a lingerie company who had BRA 42B

They are mostly from the same dealer/ supplier, whose name is at the bottom of the plate, the pigment has faded and turned from yellow to white (ish). Mine went over a short period , people need to check and get them replaced if necessary.

Have you noticed how many cars tow trailers with no plate or an unmatched plate? And bike racks where the bikes obscure the rear plate?

People seem to have decided it's worth risking being stopped for those things compared to being caught by a rear-facing speed camera.

63 plate Vauxhall sat outside my workshop with a faded plate. Looks original and matched the front one.
