My 92-year-old neighbour is exactly your scenario, he received a letter on Friday offering him a vaccination in Wigan he took it that this was his only option! He rang me Saturday clear upset as he didn't know what to do, he was asking me what buses he could get?
I explained that this was just an option for an earlier appointment and as he's clearly not able to get to Wigan he will still get his vaccination locally it might just be a little longer.
It is fantastic these centres have been set up but surely sending out a letter to a clinically vulnerable 92-year-old is only going to cause the confusion and upset it did.

All the Publicity recently has been about the Regional Centres, before that it was about going into the Homes and Staff anxious people are going to seize the earliest opportunity I can foresee people being double booked leading to non attended appointments and time & vaccines wasted. It would be a pity to see the good work and success of the last couple of weeks fall into a shambles with this unholy rush, failures are remembered success is short-lived, you are only as good as you're last game.
Vaccine waste is kept to a minimum by using 'standby' patients/medical staff or front line workers able to travel at short notice.
It also relies on the medical staff giving the vaccines to work flexible hours.
Retired medical staff are being recalled to help after first being protected by vaccination themselves.

They must be running out of 'Short Notice' patients by now as they need to be local and available and the 'first in the queue' groups are being done rapidly.

Common sense and compassion are being used and applied locally with appointments.
Not all over 80's vaccinated have partners in the same age bracket
as are those who are carers in their own homes.

Covid vaccines
Your doctor's surgery will send you a letter if you're lucky enough to have a doctor, there's no way I'm queueing up at some centre in bloody Wigan or St Helens, it would cost me a lot of money to get there.

If I was in charge of carrying out these vaccinations, I would have buses at pick up points, to take people down to the Preston Station automatic walkway, have everyone lined up with their sleeves rolled up, and a medical officer standing jabbing everyone as they moved past on the walkway - and a bit further on, a nurse standing by slapping on a plaster. Sorted! Vaccination Assembly line.

Ahh but.... queue's and buses spread the virus.
Health I.D and identity questions need to be recorded.
Medical staff need to wash their hands after each patient.
No patient leaves the medical care until a the likely hood of any severe reaction to the vaccination has passed.

It may be ok to send a batch of 975 to somewhere like Wrexham but Places like Anglesey or Colwyn Bay would require people being bused in from quite a wide area, no easy feat .

Despite all the sofa scientists complaining somehow the NHS has managed to vaccinate quite a lot of people.
Does it work perfectly for everyone....no.
Will it ever ..........no.
Which is great for the non-productive members of society who have clearly got nothing better to whinge about, aren't they lucky ?
