Blowick and Meols Cop have never had any defined boundaries. Like most suburban areas.

Yet Southport FC is in Blowick and there was a Higher Blowick area around the Everard Road district.

Incidentally Meols Cop railway station isn't in Meols Cop!!

So evidently there's some disgareement over these boundaries which have never existed on any map, hence my view such boundaries have never existed particularly when the names Blowick and Meols Cop predate the existence of any railway and originated long before the area became entirely built up. They are simply a matter of opinion.

Maybe one is part of another rather like Hillside is within the former actual boundary of Birkdale urban district council.

I have a street plan of Southport which does provide the names of the various districts, but it doesn't define the actual boundaries of each district.

I've always understood that Hillside is not an official district of the town, perhaps due to the fact that it is referred to that way because of the railway station bridge. It's not listed on my street map.

I'm fairly sure it's named after Hillside farm which was in the area before the railway and indeed any other houses existed in that area. Just as other area.may have been named after a single building or geographical feature before eveything developed into a single built up area.
Is there such thing as an official district?

Birkdale was a County Borough and took Southport over not the other way around.

    Are you sure?
Southport became a municipal borough in 1866, Birkdale UDC which included ainsdale was incorporated into it in 1912 and Southport became a county borough called Southport with hq at Southport town hall. Doesn't sound like a Birkdale takeover to me? Birkdale needing access to Southport's sewage works was a major factor.

I'm sure I read something on here but if I'm wrong I stand corrected.

Like Stuartli, I knew a builder who told me that the HB building was built with the ground conditions in mind, but that associated walkways, car park, extension had not been. I can appreciate why an insurance company would look at it and refuse to offer cover...which may well be the problem.

And as for Birkdale...why couldn't they make use of that well built Carnegie library (which would have been provided free of charge) instead of demolishing it?!

The footpath running alongside Fine Jane's Brook to the rear of the old Homebase site is now being closed off as I write.
They are moving the fence outwards to include the tarmac path.
So no more feeding the ducks or walking the dog etc along that stretch for the foreseeable future.
