    Good Morning Peloton!

Cycling as legal daily exercise during the lockdown - KEEP YOUR DISTANCE from others i.e. 2metres minimum clearance.....Further info and guidance notes:

*Regular riders: get out there and do your usual thing - have fun!

*New riders and those returning to the saddle: First check over your bike. Ensure tyres fully inflated (max pressure is on tyres sidewall). Test both brakes for proper function, adjusting if necessary. If bike has been stored, give it a fuller service, inc oiling all moving parts (do avoid getting oil on brakepads ). If in any doubt, take it to a bikeshop for inspection/service, etc.

Avoid temptation to be over ambitious at first. For your first day back in saddle, 30 minutes of moderate pedalling is fine. Second and third day, extend your ride to 45 minutes. Fourth and fifth days, plan for rides of an hours duration. Subsequent rides: feel free to either extend your time in saddle and/or pedal more strenuously to suit - have fun!

Note: General advice on minimum daily exercise to stay healthy is at least 30 minutes of meaningful exercise, i.e. an activity that raises the pulse rate.

Note: Bike shops are currently exempt from the Govts mandatory retail closedown. Would suggest phoning ahead to confirm your local shop is open.

The virus can be transmitted by air.

Why not just stay in, exercise indoors?

Good luck with that advice, you might as well ask a lemming to stay in.

Imagine the misfortune of some poor old sod having a load of huffing and puffing cyclists going past them whilst waiting to cross the road and a few of them are virus carriers.

The only good bit of fortune at the moment is the village idiots fire won't be on as much as its warmer.

The perfect storm for some people with respiratory issues is having a particulate emitting wood burning fire next door to them whilst suffering with the coronavirus.

Although there is now a lot more information that has come to light - medical researchers are still not sure just how Covid-19 is transmitted.

As of a few days ago - there were no confirmed cases of Covid-19 at Southport Hospital. There was one death at Ormskirk Hospital from the disease - but the guy had been taken ill while travelling back from an infected area in Spain - and he had several underlying conditions. Seven people died on the confined cruise ship out of around three thousand people - but these had been exposed to multiple doses of the infection and all had other conditions. The greatest risk worldwide has been due to first generation Chinese people, who had returned to their families for the Chinese New Year. From the World maps showing the outbreaks this would appear to be the main cause in Italy, and America. The first case in Spain was due to a Doctor who had travelled back from an infected area in Italy.

So I do not think there is a huge risk from people out cycling.

Imo, unless you habitually 'ride in the gutter' in an attempt to appease drivers, the risk of transmission from rider to pedestrian will be less than from pedestrian to pedestrian. You should be riding 1 metre from the kerbedge, a distance which avoids draincovers and edge-of-road defects. There is nothing to prevent a rider signalling and pulling out further to pass by pedestrians on pavements if the 2 metre social distance looks at risk.

Should cyclists also keep the 2 metre social distance away from each other?

Or do you advise that even 2 cyclists out together is one too many?

That is an option some will no doubt prefer - and there are indoor exercise 'bikes' available for that......Yet good health is not only about muscle and bone fitness, it's also important to keep the mind in mind. The experience of rolling along on a bike beneath blue skies, enjoying the constantly changing surroundings, takes some beating. Surely that form of exercise is way more therapeutic, than staring for hours at the livingroom/garage wall whilst pedalling indoors.

The irrational musings of PNP all have a very noticeable selfish theme,

I want to cycle so sod everyone else,

I want to trundle off to Holland so sod everyone else.

I want to heat my house cheaply by burning wood so sod everyone else.

I understand the Govt advice is for solo exercise, unless it's with family member/s you already live with......Can't say I've noticed any groups of non-related riders while out today tbh, only ones seen were mixed family groups; Mum, Dad, and the kids etc.

I can see how to temporarily give up that aesthetic aspect of that lifestyle experience would be far too much of a personal sacrifice to endure, for some.

For anyone still struggling with the meaning of the word "inhale" here's a definition:

...to breathe air, smoke, or gas into your lungs.

Putting to one side the Govt advice, you do see the problem with a group of 2 or more cyclists out together?

    Each to his own, mate.....

Average home energy consumption accounts for 26% of our annual carbon footprints - with our cars accounting for a goodly slice of the rest.....I choose to heat my place with a renewable fuel. Choice of personal transport here, as you know, is the bike.

Clinging to gas for home heating and driving everywhere is imo, a rather dumb approach to, er, saving the planet?
