Hi all/where Ive been/ and crab moult!

Hi everyone, I know I've not been around much, but without going into all the ins and outs, I became desperately ill last year, spent nearly a month in hospital, lost all my hair, and came so close to the Grim Reaper, I could almost smell his breath But, that said, after almost 4 years of waiting, hoping, just missing it happen, I finally got to record with photos and video my pet crab going through a full moult! I remember quite a number of you were fascinated by some of the photos I shared of my crab in the past, but nothing compares to what I managed to capture here. Nature at her finest!
Hope you enjoy this, a full crab moult is just incredible to witness

Fascinating video and thank you for sharing. How often do they go through this process, and once Archibald is fully grown will he get to keep his final shell? Nature is completely amazing, I’ll never bore of the amazing and complicated processes that are constantly and often unseen going on around us all of the time.
Sounds like you’ve had a terrible time recently, but so glad you’re back.

I'm glad you enjoyed it Donkey22
The moulting process usually occurs approximately every six months. Very young crabs will commonly moult more frequently than this, but a fully mature crab at more or less full size may only moult once a year or less. That is what is believed anyway. There are conflicting journals regarding this, but thos seems to be the general belief.
Thank you for your kind words!

Absolutely great to see you back, after your own trials love the way you can still enthuse over your crab’s next step in life.

Superb vid, last name isn’t Attenborough by chance.

I'm glad you liked it Hamble! I could barely believe I had finally got the chance to record his moult. Crabs are usually extremely elusive at that time, so I was absolutely made up

A unique film and very interesting - perhaps you could have it published for one of the Nature Journals. Well done and I am glad to hear that you also pulled through well.

Thank you! It is a dreadfully stressful time for crabs, because after the moult, the new shell is very soft for 2 - 3 days. This is when they grow. They keep sucking in water to stretch the new shell at this point, so they can achieve maximum growth before the shell hardens.
Unfortunately, a soft shelled crab makes for a very yummy snack for many predators. The crab is instinctively aware of this, so from the moment he starts to push himself out of his old exoskeleton, and for the next few days, he will live in fear and great stress.
So sorry you had a rotten year too!
    Hugs and skritchies to Mishy!
