A 88 year old Southport pensioner hits the wrong pedal and gets Banned for 5 years, £325 fine and 6 month Suspended Sentence.

They are completely different incidents. Prince Philip pulled out at a junction blinded by low level sunlight. It’s still his fault, but the one in Southport she’s come out of the Little Theatre with her foot to the floor until she caused significant damage and injury a good couple of hundred yards down the road. There’s no similarities whatsoever.

You’re quite right. One is a privileged member of the hierarchy, who can pretty much get away with anything, the other is just an ordinary member of the public. However, the similarity is that both drove carelessly, but only one of them was made to pay the price.

Well, he won't be getting away with it any more, having done the right thing and handed in his license.....In meanwhile, young newly-passed inexperienced drivers are taking out garden walls, lamp-posts, etc and no-one apparently bats an eyelid!

The only real difference is just three little letters HRH.

Whether it's three letters or not there is the matter of whether a prosecution is in the public interest.

Is it really in the public interest to have the Duke of Edinburgh up in court on a show trial? That's all it would be.

He's 97, made a mistake, handed in his licence, which I admit will not make any difference to him, it's not like he'll be walking down the drive to catch the bus, and he's apologised.

How many other people each week are not prosecuted because it's not in the public interest, but you never hear about them.

And how many of you here have had an accident in a car or bike? I know I've had some, but my accidents don't get plastered all over the front of every newspaper and website in the country and around the world.

There is a difference between a criminal act and a civil wrong. Less so with motor cars. When the police decide if to prosecute or not they do take all the circumstances of the accident into consideration. I do believe it is highly likely that the low sun would have been an influential reason why they did not prosecute.

She's 88, made a mistake, handed in her licence and apologised, whats the difference, she was plastered over the internet and newspapers as well.
