It would appear that no two reports agree with the same conclusion - so we will have to say that if animals do contract the disease then it is short lived. Otherwise, by now - there would be millions of very poorly pets.

If the reports about cats and dogs getting infected and spreading the viruswere true I suspect that they would have all been culled before the end of the month.

Ah! Well, I desperately need some fresh coconuts for my ailment and I have to travel to the Bahamas for a few months while I organise a trade deal.

The virus was short lived in Hancock and Whitty. not so for Johnson.
Where did it originate? A wet market in China possibly from bats or illegally imported African pangolins. Vuruses are very adept at jumping species.
If the big cats were infected by an asymptomatic keeper as suggested, it is possible that they could be also asymptomatic but carriers.

You're assuming its a natural virus and not man-made

I read somewhere it had been traced back to a pangolin in imported from Malaysia but there was some mystery as it was thought that there was another Species in between the infection from the bats.

The other site is warning cat owners to be careful when handling their pets and not to get to close to them if the owner is suspected of contracting the virus. Won't be long before dogs are included as well.

The BBC reports on cat owners being advised to keep them indoors

There is too little known to be sure about anything yet, simply some animals have tested positive.
Who knows they might provide some answers for us.

Imo, it could be risky handling or stroking an animal, if it's previously been stroked/touched by an infected person. Because even if animal itself is not infected, virus may survive on its coat, collar or lead, for a period of time.
