Mis-information - no chance! However, since this virus is supposed to infect surfaces, which would include, to a much greater extent, the ground we walk on - then anyone taking little poochie for a walk can expect their pet to pick up the germs on their paws and walk it back into the house, the armchairs, beds, etc., can't they?

With a thread like this, you're in danger of distressing s.port_history and their pet tortoise

Back to OP: I hope not. I'm fond of my cat but I could never keep him inside and out of harms way. He is an outside kind of guy. Who's gonna p!ss on the grass if I have to keep him in?

As an update other animals are showing symptoms this could be a very dark turn.

In the United States, there is no evidence to suggest that any animals, including pets, livestock, or wildlife, might be a source of COVID-19 infection at this time. However, because all animals can carry germs that can make people sick, it’s always a good idea to practice healthy habits around pets and other animals.

    • Wash your hands after handling animals, their food, waste, or supplies.
    • Practice good pet hygiene and clean up after pets properly.
    • Talk to your veterinarian if you have questions about your pet’s health.

For more information, visit CDC’s Healthy Pets, Healthy People website.

    https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/new...y-zoo-covid-19

"(Washington, D.C. April 5, 2020) – The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Veterinary Services Laboratories has confirmed SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19 in humans) in one tiger at a zoo in New York. This is the first instance of a tiger being infected with COVID-19. Samples from this tiger were taken and tested after several lions and tigers at the zoo showed symptoms of respiratory illness.

Public health officials believe these large cats became sick after being exposed to a zoo employee who was actively shedding virus. The zoo has been closed to the public since mid-March, and the first tiger began showing signs of sickness on March 27. All of these large cats are expected to recover. There is no evidence that other animals in other areas of the zoo are showing symptoms.

USDA and CDC are monitoring the situation and working to support the state and local health departments and state animal health officials. State animal and public health officials will take the lead in making determinations about whether animals, either at this zoo or in other areas, should be tested for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. USDA will notify the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) of this finding.

Typical of news reports from the USA - conflicting statements.
    John Hopkins reports:
New research articles have been posted to open-access sites on an almost daily basis that describe preliminary results suggesting some domestic animals can be experimentally infected with SARS-CoV-2 and may transmit the virus to other animals in an experimental setting or mount a viral-specific immune response when exposed to SARS-CoV-2. However, caution should be taken to not overinterpret results described in such articles, some of which may report on data from a very small number of animals or provide only preliminary results, and not extrapolate those results to the potential for SARS-CoV-2 to naturally infect or be transmitted by companion animals kept as pets. To date the CDC has not received any reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19 in the United States. Infectious disease experts and multiple international and domestic human and animal health organizations continue to agree there is no evidence at this point to indicate that, under natural conditions, pets spread COVID-19 to people.

Since when have tigers been classified as pets/companion animals? And since when was the US Dept. of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service considered to be news media?

You previously claimed that reports of a tiger in the Brooklyn Zoo who tested positive for Covid-19 was misinformation. The USDA reports otherwise. Did you actually read their report, or just do your usual swift scan? The tiger is believed to have contracted the virus from a zoo employee.

That was my thinking also, not something to be done by someone with lapsed insurance.

It's a fair way past the teeth to swab a tiger's throat.

OK! At present there are as many reports on the internet which support such a mutation, as there are others that disagree. So for the present - if the report is accurate - it can be accepted that the virus was short lived in the animal.
