Should A Mayor's position remain in Liverpool

Mr. Anderson has been suspended for a while while investigations take place, but should the Mayor's position remain open or should the council absorb that role to allow for more transparency in future matters?

In view of the shortage of funding for Liverpool - surely it would be a great saving if this position was discarded altogether. If not, perhaps the position should carry far less responsibilities, or given to an alternative political party member, such as an independent who would not have conflicting interests.

    Yes of course.

Far be it from me to put a Mayor out of a job in a pandemic when Manchester has the perfect candidate to move sideways.

Anderson has not been suspended, he has stepped aside whilst the investigation goes on, if responsibilities were to be distributed elsewhere surely that would increase the payroll.

Bit of a moot point there:

On Friday, Councillor Richard Kemp, leader of the Liberal Democrats in Liverpool, said if the arrest was confirmed Mr Anderson should stand down from official duties.
In a statement, he said: "Firstly, mayor Anderson must follow precedent and immediately stand down from all official duties until cleared or convicted. We all have deputies capable of carrying out our work." LBC

Not so sure about that, they were known to be the Merseyside Gang as they all belonged to the same Political Party, along with the Police Commissionaire.. The question till remains:

In May 2021, more than 20 million people in England will be choosing city-region mayors in Greater London and Manchester, West Midlands, Liverpool City Region, Tees Valley, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough and West of England. The first metro mayor of West Yorkshire will also be elected. What are metro mayors and what do they do?

A directly-elected metro mayor will be responsible for the strategic development of a whole city region, made up of several local authorities. A directly-elected city mayor, in contrast, is the head of a single city council or local authority and is responsible for public service delivery within that area.

So a Metro Mayor could in theory be a different political persuasion than
    the elected City mayor.

The City Mayor on the other hand is probably the same political persuasion as the elected party/council.

In a nutshell charisma v tribal or double jeopardy in the case of Liverpool.

The essential structural features of local Councils date back to the late 19th & early 20th centuries though of course in recent decades, central government has tampered mightily. Local governments' constitution is certainly in need of reform.
Councillors are loathe to undermine their positions. Central government is happy to do so; just not in a manner likely to give local residents much effective input or encouragement to engage.

Why the disparity between Metro and city Mayors, if Elected as Mayor both could equally be of different political persuasion to the ruling party, even nominated Mayors or often of different persuasions.

The Liverpool City Council Mayor is elected by the people. Anderson was first elected in 2012.

    In theory yes.
Not that I can rely on theory with the latest developments.
