    Should They only

Should Supermarkets only open at night? Say 9pm until 9am. It would be easier driving to places since the schools are closed, there would be fewer commuters and parking would be easier. The staff would be able to enjoy most of the afternoon off work and do what they need to do while other businesses are open - they could work four nights on and three days off. It would suit night workers, people who always forget one item, people who need to entertain, and still suit the majority of shoppers who would shop either early morning or in the evening. Good or not?

    No!

    Noise pollution at night.
Less safe in the dark for shoppers on foot.
Delivery vehicles would have to work nights.

Night work is a dastard only undertaken if it is part of the job.
Human's need to sleep at night.

Most now are open nights - and days too, i.e. near enough 24/7. Ideal really, gives shoppers maximum choice re when to shop.

Absolutely not, most carers can not get out during evening or night time as they have responsibilities at home. How do yiu suggest they do their shopping?

Its also has great environmental costs running a store 24 hours a day especially in winter is wasteful.

The reason they started opening 24/7 was that they had the store manned 24/7 by staff taking deliveries, cleaning, stacking shelves and doing maintenance so certain stores such as those close to a large factory which had shift changes at 22-00 & 06-00 it would make sense to extend opening hours. It probably doesn't cost anything as I don't think they man the checkouts.

Tesco near me is 24/7, they used to close at midnight. When they went 24/7 the reason given was they have replen shifts in anyway so may as well stay open, the only tills available are the self scan with one colleague floating around to help if needed. In Scotland stores are open 24/7 7 days a week, that makes more sense to me than only opening evenings.

At present the Tesco at Kew loses money by being open at night - but if it was only open at night then it would get used more. A lot of traffic problems along Liverpool Road are due to traffic turning into Supermarket parking lots. By only opening at night a lot of traffic problems could be resolved.

There has to be some solution to the congestion of traffic on the road because the situation is only going to increase - people will be buying more cars as they become of age. Otherwise there is just going to be a spaghetti of roads crossing the whole of the UK, with very little green belt land left untouched. Hell, soon we will be like Santa Cruz de Islot.

Why does it lose money? The staff would be there regardless of being open or not so theres no additional cost, they may as well open the doors to catch the odd twilight shopper.

Not really - the day staff fill shelves throughout the day and deliveries are made during the day too. The only reason that certain Supermarkets stay open 24 hours is because other Supermarkets stay open also. There is massive competition between the named stores - that is why when one opens in one location, another of the main named supermarkets tries to open theirs in the same area. When one store started retailing in smaller convenience stores - others followed suit.

So where is the saving? The day staff are filling shelves so there is a staff presence so they may as well open. Deliveries been made during the day along with commuter traffic, the school run etc well that makes perfect sense! Your idea is bonkers to say the least

Assuming Sainsbury's build their new store at Kew that won't be 24/7 very few of theirs are.

Ah! Well if the supermarkets were not open during the day - then those working at night would do what the day staff at present do - they would fill the shelves. The deliveries would also be at night when there is less traffic. Wakey! Wakey!
