Southport college
Just received 'Courses for Adults' from Southport College.
I first went in 1966 aged 15 years, on a Saturday morning for pottery. My daughter has just emergrated and took one, I made, to remind her of me.
Next got married, bought a house, couldn't afford furniture. Got given an old settee. Went to college for upholstery. Got a new settee. Used this skill many times.
I didn't need to go to sewing classes as we were taught sewing at school along with cooking.
The last time I went to Southport college was for machine knitting, thirty years ago. The class was fully book up for years. Till they decided all classes had to sit exams, which we had to pay for. That cancelled the class, not many people need machine knitting exams.
Now I looked at the classes, nothing that interests me. Although I wish bricklaying had been there years ago.
What classes would you like to go to?

Like you SusanB, I used to go to 'the Tech' on a Saturday morning in the mid 60's to study Art. It wasn't to gain a qualification, although it did help me get an O Level at school, but simply because I enjoyed drawing and painting. I always wanted to be a commercial artist when I left school but openings were few and far between in those days, and I ended up engineering instead.

It wouldn't have been "the Tech" you went to, but the Art College on Mornington Road...

I did the welding course there at night school, about 20yrs ago. Found the ability to gas-weld came pretty much naturally. Which since then, has been a useful addition to my set of skills.

You're correct but I always thought of them as being the one institution even if in separate buildings.
I did go back to 'The Tech' several years later when as an apprentice toolmaker, I did the first year of the City & Guilds course before going to Wigan on day release for four years.

The Technical College had engineering and commercial years, amongst others.
When I attended, we were given the opportunity to have half-a-day at the Art School for a break from usual classes. In the summer we could alternate with the Sea Bathing Lake.
The Tech and Art Colleges were in an L shaped building - the Tech entrance faced Wright Street and had a tennis court in between it and the roadway.
