    Staycation on the Costa Lot

As we're stuck at home for the foreseeable future Mrs Gazaprop and I tried the staycation malarkey.

After totaling up the cost I had to send the old wallet off to be worked on with a defibrillator!

6 nights b&b in various hotels and pubs ran out at £730, throw on another £3 - 400 for lunches and dinners and we were well over a grand before we bought a pint.
Parking for two days in Harrogate cost almost £30 and almost £50 for the same in York.
None of the accommodation was owt special and the breakfasts provided ranged from indifferent to ruddy awful.

The question is, and I understand the rationale behind it - is the 'staycation trade' making hay whilst the sun shines? Also, is it another example of 'rip off Britain'?

I would say so, and it's hardly surprising really. All hotels, B&B's and guest houses will have lost a fair bit of money over the last 18 months or so and will be doing their best to recoup their losses. They know they have a 'captive market', at least for the short term, and price rises across the market are I guess inevitable.

Got to pick your hotels in areas of lower demand and drive or train/bus into tourist spots.

Peterborough-great for us to visit London 1 hour on reg/reliable train.

Don't bother with breakfast or dinner either-that lowers the demand.
Find nice place near your hotel or go to local M&S for breakfast.

    One nighters are good value.
    Travel weekdays.

How much would it cost to bounce from accommodation to accommodation abroad? It's got to be the dearest way of having a break?

Now you know why motorhomes are so popular.....

Btw, I've just returned from a great ten-day motorhome/cycling break across the North. Did Hadrians Wall cycleway, coast-to-coast from Solway Firth to Tynemouth. Then Loch Lomond, Fort William area, Mallaig and Crinan Canal......Enjoyed all the fantastic scenery, yet never paid a penny for pitches (used free parking spots to overnight in). Food cost no more than at home, as bought everything needed from supermarkets.

I'm sure you can get much cheaper decent accommodation and food than that.

I thought the costs would be lower but the law of 'supply and demand' plays a key role.
We go to York quite often and usually park the car and forget about it. On hotel hopping the costs would have been almost identical had we stayed put.
As I said initially, I understand the rationale behind squeezing us till the pips squeak but - I fear it is a very shortsighted policy.
I'd love a motor home but the cost, (of a decent one), is prohibitively expensive.
You're almost certainly right in thinking about going somewhere less popular but - I want to be where I want to be.

On supply and demand, the second 3 nights were in the Lake District where we parked the car and valley hopped, backpacking, over 4 days. This took a little planning as Mrs Gazaprop is not as au fait with hills and the LPC as I am. Not wanting to over exert herself, I struggled to get beds, and it took about 4 hours on the phone and t'internet to arrange.

Forget Harrogate. Now might be the perfect time to take a sentimental journey back to the 50s and stay in Ourgate

It's the same with self catering, I have a week in Derbyshire in February. We have just looked for 2022, same week as previous years, same cottage (choice of 3, we've used all 3 previously) each are £200 more than 2020

Before this pandemic thing, a group of us went across on the Eurostar to France and spent a few weeks touring around staying in various random places overnight. Even the cheapest of places we stayed at, were better than those in the UK. The service was always great, the standards were very high, and the prices were half those of the UK.

Tbh, didn't keep a record, but I'd figure less than £100. But I do drive with fuel economy in mind, so no more than 50mph on de-restricted roads, periodically using laybys to get accumulated traffic behind off my tail. For the same reason, I keep it between 55mph and 60mph on motorways, same speed as the trucks.

There is a beautiful irony in your feelings about traffic and your reality of driving trucks and motorhomes. A kind of do what I say not what I do.

Fills me with a warm glow. But that's probably your contribution to global warming :-)
