What Was Your Favourite Book as a Child

What was the best book you ever read when you were young?

I read a good few books - but one that remains in my mind is Dick Turpin. I fancied riding across the countryside on a big black stallion and playing hide and seek with the law.

As I grew older, I decided that I wanted to be a medical Doctor - so I read everything to do with human biology that I could find, I really enjoyed reading these - but not one of those books, not one - mentioned that people bleed a lot when injured! I feel sick when I see blood - so there was a quick career change.

    What was your favourite read?

I had a new one every few months.

Heidi -ended in tears when mother found mouldy bread under my bed.

Pippi Longstocking- stuck my plaits up with hair spray had asthma attack.

Famous Five- I befriended some Travellers living in a caravan in Southport.

Good job you didn't read 'The Tiger That Came To Tea' .

I loved the Famous Five books. Bothered my parents until I had them all. Wish I still had them.

I remember the very first book I got from the library. It was called 'The Egg' and I can still see the front cover. My Mum was a librarian, and I was so proud of my first library card. I must have been about 3 or 4. Been an avid reader ever since.

Loved 'Stig of the Dump' and the Chronicles of Narnia too.

Can't really remember any novels read as a young child, but I do recall spending hours and hours reading through Arthur Mee's Childrens Encyclopaedias

So it's your fault the Travellers are constantly coming to plague Southport to look for you, I better go down and point them to Bury!

I was a bit of a tree climber and knee scuffer as a kid. But no I didn't want to be George or any of them. I just wanted to go to Kirrin Island with them. And be allowed to go off for days on adventures.

I might read them again, see how they've aged. Though the 'Comic Strip' versions have probably ruined them for me.

I have just looked at a map of the area now which looks quite different.

The land was waste and quite hilly bordered by Crowland street the railway line and perhaps Fine Jane's Brook.
In those days I remember there being only one old brick building on the side now with plumbing supplies and car parks.

Biggles by Capt. W. E. Johns. I flew that many sorties and never got shot down. Until I got chased off to bed!!
Out of the gloom a voice spoke unto me
''Smile and be happy things could be worse.''
So I smiled and was happy and behold
    Things did get worse!

+1 I think I must have read them all, WW1, WW2 and adventures all over the world. I've got an omnibus book with about 3 stories in but the grandsons look at me funny when I suggest reading them, they can't believe that I (or anybody else) could read them.
