With many of the Borough’s shops now open again, in line with Government guidelines, Sefton’s councillors are urging people to support local businesses and jobs by shopping locally.
Since mid-June, retailers have been told they can re-open as long as they have measures in place to protect customers and staff.
Cllr Marion Atkinson, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Skills said: “Sefton’s shops, high streets and local parades are coming back to life, which is a part of our Borough’s economic and social recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. To maximise the benefits, we are asking local people to support this revival by shopping local wherever possible.
“By making use of the shops and services on their doorstep throughout Sefton, local residents and people who work in the Borough can support our recovery.”
“Feedback indicates that, while not all shops have re-opened, where they have people are getting used to the new restrictions to ensure social distancing and protect everyone’s safety.
“There are queues but we are all getting used to that and I would appeal to people to be patient with shopkeepers and assistants.”
Cllr Atkinson added: “Sefton Council has now processed over £44 million of grants to local businesses and earlier this month announced its plans to administer the £2.2 million Discretionary Business Grant Fund to support struggling local businesses with fixed property costs.
“Our Borough will bounce back from the effects Coronavirus and we are already working with a wide range of partners to plan the future.”

Parking is too expensive to "Shop local" in the town centre. Give us the first hour free and we may return.

If you can’t afford a couple of hours of on street car parking in the town centre, I’m amazed you can afford to run a car. You should buy a bike and park for free.

I park at Ocean Plazza / Central 12 / Morrisons. Then I shop there.
I don't park on Lord street and shop there.
Therefore, my money goes to the big companies and not to local independents.

Rather silly response - so shopkeepers would be delighted with people purchasing the very limited items one can carry on a bike, would they? Would you travel around thirty or more miles on a bike to go shopping with the family?
A motorist already has to support the local economy with several taxes imposed on the owner, why should they be expected to pay even more? Modern shopping sites not only allow free parking for a number of hours, but they also provide facilities for a motorist and family to enjoy to encourage shopping in those areas. You cannot ask for a favour and then not offer something in exchange - it doesn't work like that.
Local shopping in Southport? - what is there in Southport? There are few shops to buy Men's wear, a limited number of shops with Women's wear, a tiny stock of headphones, very limited places to buy decent sportswear, nowhere to buy cycles, nowhere to buy a range of electrical goods, very limited places to buy cookwear, house hold goods etc., etc, etc., There is little incentive for business people to set up a shop even - the rents have risen far higher than income, the rates have not kept in line with footfall. The local council have refused to invest in the natural resources of a resort - when all roads lead to our coast which has never received any investment to maintain it nor make it look attractive - since this council took over. There are few leisure facilities and even the local park is closed for half the year - but ugly housing projects are allowed to continue unabated in the TOWN area, for heaven's sake, causing a common odour of sewerage that fights in opposition to the volunteer's floral arrangements. The council have had many years in which to 'invest, attract and make a profit' but have failed to do so for this area North of Merseyside, being totally satisfied in raising council taxes and making the residents pay up without giving anything back. Southport deserves far better management - better under our own efforts, or even Lancashire can only be an improvement.

Rather a silly response from you considering this thread is with regards to ‘shopping locally’. A 30 mile car journey is not shopping locally. Too much to carry on your bike? Buy one of these then. https://www.amazon.co.uk/didiosports...27750636&psc=1
You might not like it but as we push for a greener future and less polluting ways of travelling, your going to find any incentives for car use will gradually disappear while your taxes and surcharges increase. That’s how it works-sorry.

You can easily do both, shop in the independents then there is always something you need from a big company to warrant using their car park, you only need to spend £5.

".... less polluting ways of travelling" That means airline, train travel and cruises are out then doesn't it? Not to worry - you can always bike it!

The airline industry is already on its knees, cruises? No thanks, not my cup of tea, we’ll see more and more electrification of the trains and I actually had an amazing 2 weeks touring the Scottish Highlands by bike last Summer thanks. Sorted!

Seems everyone wants to run a business and expects the town's support without the efftort of putting the hours in.
