Mikhail Group in November 2021 reported for what was the Grand Casino on Lord Street developments could be:

APM Design are delighted to be working with Mikhail Hotel and Leisure Group in transforming the stunning Southport Grand Casino. The Buidling dates back to the 1920's and has some incredible features which we can't wait to bring back to life!
APM will be working closely with Mikhail Contract Interiors to ensure the original art deco theme is retained and enhanced within the new scheme.
Keep an eye out for developments over the coming months!
We certainly were not expecting it to become a 48 storey high tower as the image above shows.

The tower is set to stand 48 storey high at an impressive 178 Metres tall and will house over 140 high-quality residential apartments, a restaurant, 109 hotel rooms, an amazing wedding venue, a new and exciting fun themed bar along with a substantial car park.

The Mikhail Hotel & Leisure Group already owns some of Southport’s most striking and favourite venues including The Bold Hotel, Lord Street Hotel, Punch Tarmey’s Irish Pub, Lord Street Sports Bar and is also the operator of the fabulous new development at Southport Market.

Taking to social media there has been a mixed reaction to this news

I’m really hoping this is an extremely early April Fool’s Day prank
    Pie in the sky
I admire the positive view of Southport's future and the investment they have already made and the original plans for the old casino but I feel this might be a bit OTT
It's an absolute eyesore and I hope it's a joke!!
Good grief, absolutely wrong on all levels - right from the ground to the very top of the 48th floor.
The town does not need or want such a hideous eyesore - and dressing it up as a memorial is cynical and borderline offensive! I expect better from Mr Mikhail Hotel and Leisure Group

109 hotel rooms; 140 residential apartments; wedding venue; restaurant; and a bar. Plus all the staff required for such an enterprise.

It needs that substantial car park.

I estimate 500-600 car parking spaces. (i.e. more than Morrisons on Lord Street) and a lot of EV stations.

Be interesting to see the plans if/when they are published.

Maybe if you apply for 48 stories you get knocked back, so you revise to 28 which is what you wanted in the first place?
People who object think they have won, council planners think they have won, everybody happy.

Still needs one hell of a car park!

Pnp will obviously object to this as there is no mention of a cycle rack for his bike.

Looking where this blob is actually positioned I wouldn't be writing to the council anytime soon.
Or at least I would wait until April 1st and the primary school to finish the plans.

if nothing else, this has just proved how low the standards of journalism at the BBC have fallen, given that it has just been reported on the NW news. What a load of rubbish.

    What a potential eyesore.

At least it has generated a lot of free publicity, which was probably the object of the exercise. I will be amazed if they can actually transform the derelict Grand building into the place, or should that be palace, that is envisaged.

That would be achievement enough in a Southport town centre in a current downward spiral.

I honestly don’t get why people are against this, they are investing loads of money in helping Southport, which is a good thing not to mention loads of jobs created, it’s time we got behind the town.

Everyone wants Southport to be regenerated and brought back to the bustling town it used to be. However a 48 storey skyscraper built on unstable sand, completely out of character with its surroundings in a small coastal town is not the way to do so. We owe a great debt to the Mikhail Group for their work in revitalising the Northern end of Lord Street but this is just madness. Lord Street is a Conservation Area so I doubt planning permission would be granted for anything taller than what's already there.

As much as I’d be opposed to this completely unsuitable building for the Southport sky line. The argument about sand being unsuitable for tall buildings to be constructed on doesn’t really hold out. The 830 metre high Burj Khalifa in Dubai is famously built on sand as is the Jeddah tower in Saudi Arabia.

Correct. Sand is a great foundation to build on. Pretty much every Victorian property in Southport is built directly on sand with no concrete footing. You wouldn’t build a large tower the same way but sand is great.

There are so many negative people in this town. They say NO to absolutely every improvement if there’s nothing in it for them personally. NIMBY is the appropriate term I believe. Try being a bit more supportive, it’ll be good for your well-being rather than having a moan all the time.

Exactly right, all I have seen on here is negative comment after the other, no wonder nothing good happens in Southport, this town is full of negative people who just like to complain about anything.

This is good for our town, creating jobs, which is a plus. We are lucky we are getting investment, we shouldn’t be moaning we should be applauding this.

    Not quite on sand

"Over 45,000 m3 (58,900 cu yd) of concrete, weighing more than 110,000 tonnes (120,000 short tons; 110,000 long tons) were used to construct the concrete and steel foundation, which features 192 piles; each pile is 1.5 metre in diameter by 43 m in length, buried more than 50 m (164 ft) deep."
