The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust has been voted one of England’s top hospitals for inpatients in a recent survey – the highest-scoring cancer hospital in the North West, the joint-highest cancer hospital nationally, and one of only seven trusts in England to be rated “consistently” well above average after achieving the same rating last year.

The 2019 Adult Inpatient Survey, conducted by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), rated The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Merseyside “well above average” when compared to other hospitals in nine out of ten survey categories, including Care and Treatment, Waiting Lists and Leaving Hospital.

The survey results come as The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre celebrates the opening of its brand new £162million hospital in Liverpool city centre last weekend (27th June 2020). With 110 individual inpatient rooms with spectacular views of the city, the new hospital will transform cancer care for the 2.4million people of Cheshire and Merseyside, whilst also providing dedicated capacity to treat cancer patients during the NHS response to coronavirus (COVID-19).

The Adult Inpatient Survey asked patients to give their opinions on the care they received, including quality of information and communication with staff, whether they were given enough privacy, the amount of support given to help them eat and drink and assist with personal hygiene, and on their discharge arrangements.

One hundred and ninety-two (192) patients from The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre responded to the survey, having been discharged from hospital in July 2019. The Trust also scored particularly highly when it came to patients’ satisfaction with medical staff, achieving 9.7 out of 10 for confidence and trust in the doctors treating them.

Sheila Lloyd, Director of Nursing and Quality at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, said: “We believe our team provide the very best care and we’re delighted that our patients agree. The survey results are a true reflection of the care and dedication of our staff in looking after our patients and their families.

“Whilst The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre goes through a period of exciting change thanks to our new hospital opening, our priority remains maintaining the highest quality of care for our patients, wherever they are treated. We endeavour to continue to maintain these high scores in patient surveys across our sites.”

Last week (June 27th 2020), inpatients currently being treated at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre’s Wirral site were transferred to the new inpatient ward at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool. All future inpatients will be treated at the new Liverpool hospital.

Emma Daley, Matron for Integrated Care at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, said: “Now that our inpatient wards have been successfully transferred to our brand new hospital, we are looking forward to continuing to provide them with the very best experience, enhanced by their brand new surroundings.

“Our new hospital is also situated next to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, which will be of huge benefit to our inpatients, now and in the future, with easier access to the Royal’s other medical and surgical specialties.”

My wife has an appointment at the New Clatterbridge Centre on Wednesday 8th July,to have an injection test for her stem-cell treatment to be done in future weeks, and hopefully then,in a few weeks after treatment, another trip there for taking and harvesting her white blood cells, then an operation will take place to have them transferred back into her bloodstream,if everything has gone correctly, she will stay in the hospital for up to 5 weeks while the stem-cell treatment is done..The operation can cause her immune system to be non-existent for up to 2 years or so after the stem-cell treatment.......The Lymphoma is in her knee, and hopefully if the stem-cell treatment works first time,as it sometimes may not work, but fingers crossed it will, the next stage is an operation for knee replacement surgery to get my wife back walking again, which she has NOT been able to do since late November 2018,and confined her to a wheelchair,as the Lymphoma to her knee has completely locked the joint, and made it impossible to put any weight on her knee,as there is a possibility of it breaking the knee joint, due to the cancerous Lymphoma cells fusing the knee joint...It has been a very long journey for both of us,but we are now seeing light at the end of this very dark tunnel..And then lead as normal a life as we can do in future years, and hopefully go away on a long, and well earned holiday back to Kos after all we have been through..
