Coastal Road closure from Monday September 13th to Friday October 8th.

The closure is fo the final stages of the cycle lane improvement works, which have widened the footpath along the Birkdale to Pinfold Lane stretch of the coastal road.

Closures are in affect for the full four weeks, running 'off-peak' between 9.30am and 3.30pm Monday - Friday on the southbound lane only.

    Full statement from Sefton Council.

Works are set to resume on the final phase of the Southport Coastal Road Cycle scheme, with contractors returning to the road from next Monday (September 13th).

The scheme is part of the Southport East West Cycle Link improvement project, with funding from the Liverpool City Region and primarily compromises of the widening of cycle track between Weld Road roundabout and the bridge at Pinfold Lane.

Following a delay due to avoiding any disruption during the summer period and other conflicting works in the Southport area, the final stages of the cycle lane upgrade works will now be completed, with contractors working on the stretch of carriageway between Weld Road Roundabout and Shore Road Roundabout from Monday, September 13th.

These works are expected to take around four weeks to complete and require a temporary off-peak closure of the southbound lane, between the hours of 9:30am to 3:30pm Monday - Friday.

Well, knock me down with a feather - I'd thought the incomplete work was 'cos they'd run out of funding!

Wonder when they will get round to removing all those wooden posts which serve no purpose except to injure or kill motor cyclists.

There are two dislikers for your post so they must think that those posts are there for protection, I don't like to burst their bubble but they are as strong versus a car/van/lorry as a wet paper bag.

The posts are an anachronism to modern motoring perhaps suited to an era of horse and carts.

They do though mark the divide cheaply so I suppose they are a (dangerous to some) visual marker.

The road has been fully open all week, work has not started yet. What a surprise!

Which alternate reality are you living in?
There’s been a daytime closure of the coastal road at the Weld Rd roundabout to Woodvale lights all week.

Yet I rode down there 2 days ago at 4pm and there was plant machinery there that had clearly moved some of the gravel ready for the resin surface to be applied.

no they're there to stop cars moving not the footpath/cycle path

Correct.....They are to stop people parking on the gravel/path. Doing so is dangerous, because they have to brake to park, which could cause a pile-up. Not to mention the hazard they present when pulling out into fast-moving traffic on setting off. Hasn't stopped people doing so in the past though, at locations where several posts were missing.
