Concessionary travel restrictions lifted amid COVID-19 pandemic

From start of service on Monday 23 March until further notice the 9:30am concessionary travel restrictions will be lifted on Merseyrail.

This allows those over 60 with concessionary passes to travel at all times on the network – not just during the off-peak period.

This will allow these passengers to take advantage of moves by major supermarkets to open early for the elderly and vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic.

An agreement was reached with Merseyrail, Stagecoach, Arriva, Northern, Transpennine Express and other bus operators to support this.

When will the restrictions on concessionary travel come into effect?

The restrictions will be lifted from start of service on Monday 23 March and continue until further notice.

How will this work when I get to the station?

If you arrive at a station with automatic ticket gates, these have been reconfigured to accept your pass before 9:30am so you will be able to pass through the gates as normal.

What if my pass doesn’t work/my pass isn’t working?

If you are having trouble passing through the automatic ticket gates, please speak to the nearest member of Merseyrail staff who will be able to assist you.

Why have you only lifted these restrictions now?

The restrictions are being lifted to enable people over 60 to take advantage of moves by major supermarkets to open early for the elderly and vulnerable
