Southport MP Damien Moore's urgency to jump into print over local matters has apparently led to truth being a casualty in respect of his recent false statements of fact about local rail services. For, the MP's recent press releases and Facebook postings have falsely declared that there are now plans to completely withdraw any direct rail service to Manchester from the town.
In fact, what are being proposed by transport planners are various ways of scrapping present services from Southport to Manchester's Oxford Road, Piccadilly and Deansgate stations, and forcing all travellers to Manchester to have to alight at Salford Central or Manchester Victoria stations in future. This will thus make work journeys to the University or city offices, shopping trips and connections by tram and rail to destinations in the South of Manchester and Salford Quays as well as to Manchester airport slower and more inconvenient.
Mr Moore made the same error, apparently displaying a lack of familiarity with the rail issue, not once but twice in Facebook postings only two days apart. Thankfully, the people of Southport have a number of councillors of various parties and OPSTA (the Ormskirk, Preston and Southport Travellers' Association), who do know the issues well, to take up the cudgels on their behalf. See: http://www.opsta.btck.co.uk/Manchest...cesunderthreat and http://btckstorage.blob.core.windows...om%20opsta.pdf
Southport residents are advised to make their own views known clearly about the proposed changes on the website:
The official arguments for the proposed changes are here:
I see he sent a letter to the Manchester Recovery Task Force, which was signed by a Labour MP, a representative of the OPSTA and the Leader of Lancashire Council, so I take it, they must agree with all the false statements, and does that then mean they are also useless and incompetent?

Just so you know, the Manchester Rail Recovery Task Force was set up under this government, it basically consists of three main parts of which the Department for Transport is by far the most significant.
So while ostensibly the consultation is by the MRRT and Mr Moore is happy to name it during PMQs to try to deflect blame by focussing attention onto it, it's actually the DfT with its sticky finger prints all over this. As it was with the previous recent threat to the service.
Moore previously tried to pin the blame for this dodgy consultation on Transport for the North on this very site just a couple of weeks ago, he's now moved to MRRT, basically he'll point the finger anywhere but where the buck stops - at the DfT and this colleagues in government.
