I’m continuing my campaign to reinstate the Burscough Curves, ensuring that Southport can fully benefit from our £38.5 million Town Deal funding to upgrade Lord Street and the Waterfront.

What a waste of space he is. He was “electioneering” around here yesterday, spouting his absolute rubbish.

Regardless of your opinion of whether this could happen, and regardless of your political leaning, why should he not campaign for the curves to be reinstated which would be obviously beneficial for the town?

The line is single track from Ormskirk up to Penwortham and doesn't have the capacity to accommodate more traffic much above the hourly service to and from Preston, if the Curves were to be reinstated it would require considerable engineering work and expense to install passing points at Croston / Midge Hall and Burscough / Ormskirk.
The viability of the Preston Ormskirk line (and the bus services) would be at risk as traffic from Croston and Burscough to Preston and Burscough to Ormskirk would be lost to the new services from Southport.
Currently changing trains at Wigan can lead to a journey of around an hour and a more frequent service.
There is already a more than adequate bus service from Southport to Ormskirk some of which stop outside Ormskirk Hospital similarly there is a good Southport to Preston service with many stops throughout both towns negating any extra travel time.

If Dumbo wants a crusade he would be better off campaigning for a Ring Road around Southport and / or the Eastern Link towards Ormskirk being upgraded with an Ormskirk Bypass.

Credit to Damien, it's got to be a good time to press the case; the government will be anxious to spend money wherever they think a seat is salvageable.

The bus service to (and through, including the hospital) is not good.

Restoring the southbound link to Ormskirk, Maghull and thence to Liverpool would certainly be useful, if it were to be incorporated into the Merseyrail system.

This is rubbish. There is already dual lines through Rufford station for passing. There is also very little traffic on the line, so why would the single track line only be able to accommodate one train each direction per hour?

Note the curves were both northbound and southbound. It would be simple to add services direct to/from Southport to Preston and beyond, and to/from Southport and Ormskirk.

Again, leave the politics aside and the proposal to reinstated the Burscough curves makes a lot of sense for Southport, given there is no prospect of better road links in the near future.

I agree! The roads are a nightmare at the best of times, but during rush hour it is far worse. The greater majority of workers travel from Southport to Preston and Manchester a regular train service would be good linking services to the following stations:

Ideally, Preston to Burscough, Southport, Skelmersdale, Ormskirk, Wigan and through to Liverpool or Manchester. Skelmersdale would be the best place for a rail junction. This would alleviate pressure on the roads for sure.

    Don't fall into his trap.

He is following Central Office advice to find local issues he can attach himself to, for fear voters are conscious of the appalling record in government of his party,

Can you explain to us how a rail service would help access Southport Hospital which is nowhere near the stations?

  16. ECHOEONE says:11/02/2024 09:03 PM
West Lancs council and Sefton are dis-functional and don't ever co-operate. Consequently a road solution north or east is just not going to happen. Rail is the only alternative as the green left wing point out. Restoring the BC is the only alternative unless these failing councils get merged or boundaries re-drawn so that Southport's land lock is removed.

If you look back to Alikado's post, he alluded to bus service linking Southport to Ormskirk Hospital:
"There is already a more than adequate bus service from Southport to Ormskirk some of which stop outside Ormskirk Hospital …"

As happens, I would like to see the southbound [Burscough] curve restored and rail service between Southport and Liverpool via Ormskirk, Aughton Park, Town Green and Maghull.

[For what it is worth, I had in the past posted in favour of creating a rail station at the disused Park & Ride near Meols Cop retail outlets. Combined with a nexus for bus services, that could have provided better public transport options for Southport, generally. But that option will have been foreclosed by the residential developments proposed for the site, I expect.]

Pie in the sky, unfortunately. Reason? Govt policy for years now, has been to lay no new third-rail lines anywhere, as they are dangerous.

Agree. Ideal ready-made location for a park-and-rail site. To put housing on the old P & R site is pure folly, particularly when there is plenty of room for that housing on the big field just behind.

The problem is Lancashire County Council an Ormskirk Bypass has been mooted for many years but will not receive the support of LCC as it is not to the benefit of THEIR area as Southport is not part of Lancashire

A Rail station would have been very useful for both travellers to Southport and towards Wigan / Manchester, when the Park n Ride was built it was envisaged that the bus bus would call at the hospital but they refused access because of the probable loss of parking revenue.

Moving both Burscough Stations to the point where the lines cross and creating a bus rail interchange would probably be a good alternative to reopening the curves if they could get the train times coordinated.
