The Rose Tea Rooms have erected a large Xmas tree outside their premises on Weld Parade, Birkdale Village.
Birkdale residents have already took to social media and commented “Well... hello Birkdale!” and “Rose Tea rooms saves the day!” and “Finally a tree to be proud of in our lovely village!”
We talked to Barry Minerro, owner, to find out more:
“I wanted to show my Grandaughter, Charlotte, the excitement of a large lit up tree near to both her grandparents businesses,” Barry revealed,
“Also the “Shore-side” of the railway line where we are located is like the dark side of the moon!!”
“A couple of years ago the Birkdale Civic Society was kindly donated £25,000 of equipment ...unfortunately for us this was only used to replenish the other side of the tracks.. ”
The Weld Road side of the railway track is home to many thriving businesses such as Ruma, The Park Hotel, Laura Ashley, Bar Nista and the The Rose Tea Rooms, just to mention a few.
“I believe our village is quite rare to the fact that there are so many independent businesses thriving in these harsh times.“ says Barrie.
The Weld Parade, where the tea rooms is located, is on private land so Barrie got permission from the landlord to put a hidden permanent structure in place to house the tree.
“The amount of positive comments and smiles from people passing by in just 24 hours is very rewarding and more than makes up for the expense that has been spent!”
The Rose Tea Rooms of Birkdale serve breakfast, lunch, brunch and afternoon tea from freshly sourced ingredients from local traders on vintage China crockery.
Thank you to The Rose Tearooms for talking to Friends of Southport today. We think the tree is just what Birkdale needs!

Quite right - Birkdale is a "village" of two halves, so both should have a fair share of any grants available. But how ironic! When I bought my house in 1992, it was made clear to me the first time I tried to talk to someone in one of the local cafes (still here, but different management) that I was living on the "wrong side of the tracks!" Now it appears Shoreside has become "the wrong side!" Shouldn't we have outgrown all this nonsense?
