This evening (21 Jan) the Lib Dems in Liverpool are making a formal move to scrap the City's own elected mayor - a post presently held by Joe Anderson, presently 'on gardening leave' while being investigated by police under corruption allegations which also include former Militant boss Derek Hatton. If the Lib Dems get their way that would leave just the ceremonial Lord Mayor and Steve Rotheram, the Liverpool City Region Mayor - as well as a Police and Crime Commissioner. These officers are paid roughly £85,000 per year each.

A couple of jobs at £85K is not drastic - but each of those positions includes a very large staff each earning around £40K. Far too expensive for jobs that are not required and for work thqt can be undertaken by any leading council member.

The New Normal does not include for excessive expenses - if everyone on Merseyside is being expected to pay more - then there should be huge cuts in Council expenditure to show an example.

Exactly, as soon as the Police and Crime Commissioner got in to her position, she like many others, started “empire building” employing many others to help her to do her job. Self importance also plays a part in this procedure too and we have to pay for this extravaganza. It is time to call time on these self centred people.

For several decades central government has been serially
tinkering with local government.

…and what is the result? It certainly has NOT improved local government effectiveness or democratic legitimacy.

We have a cycle of the centre stripping Councils of their former scope and voters increasingly discounting Councils' importance. All the while Councillors, themselves, have been becoming impotent. Absurd mutual recriminations come to the fore, especially so in advance of local elections. None of these Council groups ever offers a better way to administer local services. They focus too much on promoting their respective brands.
