Major U turn by the Lib Dems.
Norwood Lib Dem councillors in the past have steadfastly refused to consider opening Foul Lane to through traffic citing a dangerous increase in vehicles on residential roads would result.
Prasnee I think was the last to debate the issue on here and was dead against it.
    What has changed their thinking?

This “possible solution” has been talked about for years so “Lib Dems come up with” is a bit of a stretch! I wouldn’t put it past them to release a story of “Lib Dems come up for solution for wheels...they’re round, now please vote for us, we’re desperate “. It’s like the attempt to ignore the history of John Pugh voting for PCCs and Simon Shaw approving the deputy choice “remarking on satisfaction with transparency” with all the moaning because they’re labour!

With our libs it should always be forefront of how much they’ve not delivered for the town so regardless of new or old ideas there’s very little chance of them actually being implemented. However this does give them another chance to express their bitterness at how they wasted over £100k of taxpayers money trying to block Sainsbury’s and further speed the decline of out of town shopping whilst in-town also continued to decline.

This should be done it would help traffic flow and really shouldn't cause chaos!

It's a good idea although the video from this unknown scruffy looking Lib Dem looks very amateur. I wonder if the local Lib Dem councillors are all on board with this idea as Simon Shaw (prasnee) has certainly voiced his objections to the idea in the past on this forum.

This will never happen while Joe Public keeps suggesting and asking for it. It will only come to fruition when Sefton Councillors can come up with the idea themselves.

Well if THAT is the case.... I won't be holding my breath waiting for that decision!

Whilst I agree that opening up Foul Lane is a good thing, heavy goods vehicles will not be able to turn onto Crowland St. without significant change to the road layout and the loss of kerb side parking in that area.
So costing will dictate the outcome.

The residents of Wennington Rd, Canning Rd, Cobden Rd, Butts Lane, Crowland St and probably several other streets would be really looking forward to this.

Has anybody ever taken a census of how many and what types of vehicle actually turn right at Butts Lane, Peel Street, Bispham Road and Roe Lane so there is some sort ob basis upon which to make a sensible decision. I feel sure the abolition of the "no through Road" on Wennington Road between Cobden Road and Crowland Street would achieve something, just not sure what. I seemto remeber it was a continuous road some years ago when it resembled a dirt track, no idea why it was closed off after it was improved.
If the way onto Foul Lane were to be at the mini roundabout, there would need to be some action taken against large lorries parking near the tip entrance and the build-up of cars waiting their turn to enter the tip site at busy times, also a height restriction for the railway bridge.

It is dubious that any of the residential streets would be affected or see a serious increase in traffic.

As mentioned, Wennington Road has no direct access for through traffic. Using it would involve driving via Crowland Street, Canning Road and Cobden Road. The section of Wennington between Cobden Road and Bispham Road has some of the worst speed humps in the country.
The road was closed to prevent use as a through route and because it is part of the main cycle route.

Canning Road was calmed many years ago with priority changes (give ways) and a chicane. It also has a weight limit.

Butts Lane/Crowland Street already take a substantial number of the vehicles using the industrial area. I cannot see why traffic using Foul Lane would turn into Butts Lane at all except as a means to avoid the Kew roundabout. Rejoining the main traffic at the often congested Butts Lane /Norwood Road traffic lights might appeal to some drivers.

Cobden Road is oddly still 30mph and not calmed although mostly residential. Again there would be little point in using it as part of a through route.

There are also Russell Road which again has similar speed humps to Wennington Road and Clifton Road which was blocked at the junction with Butts Lane many years ago.

HGVs frequently negotiate the corner at Butts Lane/Norwood Road junction which is no different to the Foul Lane/Crowland Street junction.

Kerbside parking is not an issue at present. There isn't any due to the yellow lines and pedestrian crossing zig zags.

Good grief, what a load of diatribe by "Council Trolls"!
Face the facts you gang of muppets - the retailers moved out of the town centre for the following reasons, 1. extortionate parking costs (lack of footfall) 2.extortionate rates + rents 3. challenging planning legislation restricting expansion 4. virtually every other national retailer has left Southport due all of the above!
Whose fault is it? Labour controlled Sefton Council's with minimal opposition from Conservatives and Liberal Muscrats..........
What's the solution? Southport out of Sefton!

Pay and display was introduced long before Labour took control of Sefton 6 years ago.
Rents are set by the landlords (which isn't the council)
Rates are set by the government
Planning laws are made by the government
Most of the national retailers that have left have left because they went bust nationally.

    Prasnee where are you ?

You can crawl back out from under your yellow rock and tell me how this is suddenly a good idea.
Perhaps you might now consider Foul Lane is suitable for commercial development ?

Whilst your having a rethink, how about the cost of Bank Bailouts ?

    You couldn't make it up.

I think he’s too busy getting heated on the other local news site Facebook on the playground mums thread trying his hardest to debate/berate but avoid question on whether cllr Dawson has been sent on social media training yet and whether he posted a picture of a woman and child to prove they were a labour supporter so that’s why they challenged the lib way..... you’d think the libs would leave playground-gate alone!

The Lib Dem avoidance of questions reminds me of this one where the question was never answered except by a moderator later on:

Pretty poor behaviour by our electives in my view and highly unlikely to achieve anything positive for Southport whilst it continues, if I led the council I’d take away party leader allowances (John Pugh get an extra £4K) as they don’t seem to be able to control their parties to behave in our best interests over their wilting rosettes.
