One of Southport's most popular attractions is up for sale. The model railway village in the Kings Gardens is up for sale after opening in 1996.

Knightsbridge Business Sales are handling the sale.

Knightsbridge is now accepting offers on Southport Model Railway Village.

Southport Model Railway Village first opened in 1996 and was the first model railway village in the UK. The attraction is designed to reflect local architecture from Merseyside and South West Lancashire. Southport Model Railway Village is located on a 1.5-acre freehold site which includes landscape features such as two ponds which are regularly visited by local wildlife.

Southport Model Railway Village generated a healthy turnover of £77,000 last financial year despite a limited opening season. The attraction benefits from an excellent location on the Lower Promenade, which sees high footfall especially during the Summer months. Southport Model Railway Village also boasts a 4.5 out 5 rating on Tripadvisor and is ranked 2nd of all tourist attractions in Southport.

There is potential for growth through increased opening hours and seasonal events. The shareholders are also willing to provide support and training to the new owners.

Knightsbridge has also produced a video to highlight the popularity of the business https://jwp.io/s/LkODlPYS

    Surely that's not right?

Your right, glad they checked their info before writing the story.

Just a bit of research brought this up'
A Charles Paget Wade created Fladbury (Model Village) around the edge of the garden in 1908 and it's stated, the most famous model village in the country, Bekonscot, was opened in 1929.

From Southport Model Railway Village's website:-
"When it opened to the public in 1996 it was the largest outdoor display of G gauge railway in the United Kingdom. Today it still remains as one of the largest displays in the UK. "

Perhaps there's a distinction between a "model village" and a "model railway village".

As a child, I spent many happy hours wandering around Southport's 'Land of the Little People' which was located roughly where Morrison's car park is today. It was a beautifully laid out model village in landscaped gardens and had a O or G gauge railway running around and through it. Very similar to the one in Beaconsfield as I believe they were both designed or constructed by the same person. The current model railway village is okay, but nowhere near as detailed and landscaped as our old one was. Happy memories . . . . .

Yes indeed, I mentioned Land of the Little People in another thread. Harry Corbett and Sooty used to charge one shilling for a photo with them - I've still got it somewhere, circa 1959.
