Today's Covid figures released at 4pm October 22nd continue to show an increase in cases, deaths and hospital admissions.



There are calls from many sectors for the UK Government to implement Plan B.

What is Plan B?

The health secretary said in September that the government could bring in extra measures in England, if necessary, to protect the NHS from "unsustainable pressure":

• Communicating clearly and urgently to the public that the level of risk has increased, and the need to behave more cautiously
• Introducing mandatory Covid passports
• Making face coverings compulsory again in certain settings
• Advising people to work from home

These proposals - Plan B - would only bring England effectively in line with restrictions still in place in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

In recent days there are calls from several bodies for the Government to act now.

The British Medical Association (BMA) chairman, Dr Chaand Nagpaul said doctors can "categorically" say that the "time is now" for starting Plan B.

He stressed that case numbers were comparable to March, when England was in lockdown, and were "unheard of in similar European nations".

"It is therefore incredibly concerning that [Mr Javid] is not willing to take immediate action to save lives and to protect the NHS," he said.

Whilst nothing is set in stone the government has consistently said there are no plans for another lockdown in England.

The Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) said, in a meeting last week, the reintroduction of mask-wearing, working from home guidance and vaccine certification – key components to the government’s ‘plan B’ – would “reduce the need for more stringent, disruptive, and longer-lasting measures” further down the road.

In minutes published on Friday, Sage said that advice to work from home is “likely to have the greatest individual impact” in cutting infections, which are now increasing in the majority of age groups and regions across the UK, according to official data.

On Tuesday evening the NHS Confederation warned the government needed to take “preemptive action” amid “worrying increases in coronavirus cases in its hospitals and the community”.

If only the government had a Plan A that would help.
