The old Argos store on Lord Street is being converted into a Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation charity shop.

Furniture and shelving are already in place for the opening in the not too distant future.

Better a full shop than an empty shop.

I don't understand the snobbery about charity shops. The items for sale weren't made as sub standard because they were destined for resale as 'pre-owned'.

Is it because those who look down on them don't want to mix with other shoppers who they see as inferior?

Another of Douglas Adams' predictions that can true:

    "Shoe Shop Event Horizon
The Shoe Event Horizon is an economic theory that draws a correlation between the level of economic (and emotional) depression of a society and the number of shoe shops the society has.
Eventually the titular Shoe Shop Event Horizon is reached, where the only type of store economically viable to build is a shoe shop. At this point, society ceases to function, and the economy collapses, sending a world spiraling into ruin."

The only thing he got wrong was the type of shop.

Great! Three birds with one stone.
    1. One less empty shop on Lord St, and let’s face it, there’s plenty on Lord St currently.
    2. Plenty of quality second hand goods on sale for bargain hunters and people on a low income who can’t afford to buy brand new.
    3. Cash going to a very worthy cause.

Good cause or not, It's still a shame this is what the high street has been reduced to. Not Just Southport, but around the country.
Retailers can't make it pay, but someone with no rates, reduced rent(probably) and free to low cost labour can.
Not really what you would call good for the economy.

Hardly the fault of the charity shops.
