The remaining four Division One matches will all be contested next week with some important issues to settle.
I will write a short report next weekend to conclude everything from the First Division this term.
Division 2
Huge congratulations must go to St Cuthberts for capturing the Second Division crown and, most importantly, regain their place, at the first time of asking, back in Division One next season. The St Cuthberts lads went into battle with Farmers Club for their final league match knowing that a draw would be enough mathematically to clinch the title but they showed no sign of nerves as they cruised to a 5-1 triumph to win the coveted title by a very comfortable eight points. They accrued a very impressive one hundred and seven points, gaining a fine seventeen wins on their journey to success. It's also a double and treble celebration for St Cuthberts Steve McBrinn as he sealed the Divisional Highest Player award with an awesome record of twenty four wins from twenty six matches played with a fantastic 92.31%. Steve also takes the Division Two Highest Break trophy with an excellent break of 39 made in league week eighteen.
Skelmersdale Wardens A grabbed the runners-up spot after pushing the winners all the way for the vast majority of the campaign and again, most importantly, clinch their slot back in the top flight after only a single season away. The Skelmersdale A boys had a disappointing end to the season as they were comprehensively beaten by the form team in recent weeks and last season's Champions, Aughton Institute D 5-1. This result saw them finish a fraction short of the century mark ending on ninety nine points and, they too, achieved a superb seventeen victories throughout the campaign. The Aughton D boys finished in a very creditable third place, made even more impressive by their very slow start to the season as it looked like the weight of Defending Champions was sitting heavy on their shoulders. They were definitely the form side in the last few weeks as they won their last five matches, certainly title-winning form, and I'm sure they will be one of the firm favourites to win the crown next season.
Stanley Club B finished in a very respectable fourth position after being up with the pace-setters for long periods of the campaign but it could have been so much better for the Burscough-based outfit as their season sort of petered out towards the end as they failed to win any of their last five matches as they drew them all to fall behind the pace of the leading sides. They went into battle with Skelmersdale Wardens C and both teams could not be split on the night with a 3-3 stalemate. In all they drew nearly half their matches contested throughout the campaign with thirteen and with that loss of points it cost them in the long run but still an excellent season for the Stanley B boys. The match saw Skelmersdale Wardens C's Neil Telford in top form with fine breaks of 27 & 22 in his frame victory. The Skelmersdale Wardens C team finished in sixth in the league table but their season is far from over as they have a Le Rose Cup semi-final match in just over a week's time.
Skelmersdale Wardens B clashed with Stanley Club C in their final match this term and it saw both sides unable to separated with a 3-3 scoreline reached at the end of the evening. The match saw Stanley Club C quickly move 2-0 ahead and looking very good to seal just their second victory of the campaign but the Skelmersdale B lads came fighting back to take three of the last four frames of the encounter to grab a share of the spoils. The match saw Skelmersdale B's Michael Fawcett in good touch with a nice break of 24 in his frame success. The Skelmersdale B outfit finished the season in a solid fifth slot.
The other match played this final week saw Aughton Institute C end their campaign in fine style with a comprehensive 5-1 win over club compatriots, Aughton Institute B in the final Aughton 'Derby' match of the campaign. The match saw the first two frames of the contest shared but then the Aughton Institute C team upped their game considerably by taking the final four frames of the match to complete their straightforward win. The result saw the two sides finish a disappointing eighth and ninth respectively in the league standings. The match also saw Aughton C's Dave Ball in solid nick with a good break of 23 in his frame success.
Other notable break this week was – M Pickles (Stanley Club C) 21.
