Southport BID have revealed that it cost £11,000 for Peter Andre to come and switch on Southport Christmas Lights. The whole event cost £45,000 entirely funded by the BID levy payers.

People have taken to Facebook to vent their opinions.

11K on that idiot yet no lights on Scarisbrick Ave or Neville street. which businesses benefited from BID spending 45K of business owners money?

we are on the promenade and not a Christmas light in sight.. Total rip off

Should give a local town hero the honour of turning lights on. They get photo and story in the paper and we save £11k win win.

So...let’s put this into perspective. For starters I am a BID levy payer as I have a small business within the zone so can safely say am entitled to an opinion.

Whether the money has been spent wisely or not I believe it was...other levy payers are e
ntitled to disagree but it helps to remember the lights switch on of 20 odd years ago when 2 sparsely decorated lorries went past a few hundred people on Lord St and that was about it...always a real anticlimax.

Now we have an event that thousands turn up to and indirectly will benefit most town centre retail businesses who have an open mind! We could of course go back to the event of 20 years ago and everyone would be complaining that it was rubbish!

Sometimes you just can’t win! PA’s are expensive but £11000 spread out amongst the 950 levy payers is £12.22 per business on average! Great value

When I saw the headline, it looked liked Andre had paid £11k to switch the lights on, which would have been a much better option.
