The Atkinson Theatre today, Wednesday October 12th, hosted a presentation by Norman Wallis about Southport Pleasureland focussing on the past, the present, and the future.
The very well attended event provided was appreciated by a very attentive audience.
The past described the long established family history in the amusement and enterteinment sector, going back even to the 1840's 1850's. In fact there is a current exhibition at the Atkinson 'Barnum in the Blood: Six Generations, One Passion' which we will report upon tomorrow.
The present covered from when Blackpool Pleasure Beach 'destroyed' anything of any value or purpose when they left the site before Norman Wallis obtained the option to take over the site.
Needless to say the audience were shocked to hear that the destruction was done on purpose as to not leave anything usable on the site.
Southport Pleasureland has expanded so much since Norman Wallis took over, effectively building it up from scratch. Recently the expansion has included the Viking Golf, The Big Wheel, and the Alpine Village which have proved very popular.
But what about the future? Norman certainly thinks big and believes the park can attrqact people from a wide radius not just Southport. New developments can really put Southport on the map as a must visit destination. Norman and his team have travelled the world to see how other parks operate including the USA, China, Holland and Germany to name some.
There are plans for a Dinasour Park - everyone loves Dinosaurs. The potential big attraction would be a major roller coaster. A video was shown of a roller coaster experience to the audience which probably made a few feel a bit sick! Maybe that's for a younger generation than many of those in attendance.
Norman is certainly passionate about the park and plans to keep changing in these ever changing times.
Finally, and probably the part you wanted to know is that Southport Pleasureland will be rebranded.
It will become:
Port of Adventure at Southport
This rebranding will also avoid a lot of confusion with people of the current name and Blackpool Pleasure Beach.
