There is to be a protest on the pavement outside the Salvation Army this evening at 6:30pm where the Sustrans / Sefton Council consultation event is taking place. People were invited to book 10 minute slots between 15:30 and 19:30 for face to face talks over the proposals. The first set of slots were quickly filled and more were made available. Booking is now not possible but people are still invited to simply turn up for talks.

Facebook groups in Southport are organising the protest.

It was claimed that 4,500 survey leaflets were sent out earlier in the year and only 14% responded.

Anne Dempsey decided to check the validity of this and reported:

I went out door knocking on Talbot Street this evening. I met some lovely people, many of whom knew absolutely nothing about the Liveable Neighbourhood Scheme - which actually includes their neighbourhood!!

Out of the 23 houses that I got a response from, only ONE had received a leaflet from Sustrans!!

“All 4500 households have been informed” and only “14% responded”. Well, I know the reason!! The assumption was made that all other households were happy with the plans. Well again, that view I can assure you, is very far from the truth! People are really angry that they have been excluded, ignored and misrepresented!

Let Southport people organise what is needed for Southport streets. These people clearly don’t know Southport very well!
Protest is planned for 6:30pm tonight, Tuesday October 19th, outside The Salvation Army on Shakespeare Street.

For what it's worth I think that 14% is a fairly high response rate.

Some people really need to get a life.....standing about in the rain like Browns cows, to oppose the humble bicycle simply beggars belief!

N.B. The residents who said they had 'not' been leafleted, may well have thrown it in the bin as junk mail, without ever reading/digesting it. Few people now will remember if they received a particular flyer several months ago. Going round asking about it the same day or week as the thing was delivered, would have been far more effective.

N.N.B. Revive/bring back the Birkdale Dune Path scheme!

This has NOTHING to do with the cycle lanes!!! Try finding out what it is about before you write such nonsense. 4,500 people in the area were supposed to have been given leaflets regarding the scheme approximately 2 weeks ago and NOT" several months ago" Please get your facts right and again THIS IS NOTHING TO DO WITH CYCLE LANES that is a seperate agenda
