Doug Tharme is our second signing of the summer as Liam continues to build his squad for the 2021-22 campaign.

Doug was with Curzon Ashton last season before joining up with Connah’s Quay Nomads in the Welsh Premier League when the Vanarama National League season was curtailed. He had 4 sub starts for The Nomads.

21 years old and born in Birkenhead Doug is a commanding 6 foot 4 inch centre back who will add height to our back line.

Doug made his Wrexham debut in November 2017, before signing his first professional deal with the Welsh club in July 2018. Doug went on to register seven first team appearances for the Red Dragons, enjoying a good run in the first team with his proudest moment coming when he captained Wrexham at Ibrox Park.

While at the Racecourse Ground, Wirral-born Doug had loan spells away from the club. In July 2019 Doug made his first loan switch to AFC Telford, however the defender was recalled from the New Buck’s Head by Wrexham just over a month later in September.

Doug also enjoyed a spell at Radcliffe Boro before arriving at Curzon in August 2020 on a deal until the end of the season.

Manager Liam Watson said “I have been aware of Doug for a couple of years and watched him develop. I thought he did well for Curzon last year and he is a good signing for Southport Football Club. He’s strong, athletic, very mobile and able to play with both feet. He’s very comfortable playing out from the back, but also dominant in the air and in the tackle.

On signing Doug said ” Like everyone else I can’t wait to start playing football again and the move to Southport is perfect for me. I am still involved with coaching youngsters at Wrexham, I am doing an Open University Course through the PFA and work as a supply teacher in a Primary School and this will be a new challenge and one that I will relish”
