Earlier this year Sustrans carried out consultations on behalf of Sefton Council.
Sefton want to impose a “Liveable Neighbourhood scheme” whether residents and business want it or not the recent leaflets would show its coming, Residents and business will have to live with it.
What is wrong with the scheme?
Southport’s Lee Durkin explains:
“I campaigned against this scheme early this year the reason is.
The scheme is supposedly designed to make life better by allowing people to get around from A to B if they walk, cycle or use a wheelchair, now for as long as I have lived in Southport (my whole life 41 years) we have had pavements for people to walk on, roads to cycle on, People in wheelchairs will often use their cars to travel distances they deem suitable for driving but this scheme sets out to make that extremely difficult.”
Lee went on to explain more:
“The scheme has now progressed; we can see streets are indeed being blocked off at one end and I don’t mean roads without shops but the roads that have the very businesses that make Southport. Residents will have to carry out three point turns on double parked roads to try and leave their homes, and that’s every time they leave their home, then be herded like cattle along routes which will be longer and involve sitting in traffic thus creating more pollution.
The congestion will destroy the town. The council and Sustrans have not shown consideration to redesign of the junctions that will be accommodating the enormous volumes of traffic. For example: Duke Street junction with cemetery Road will become a constant grid lock state and that’s before the new supermarket is built on the George pubs site again showing Sefton Councils incompetence.”
Lee finished with:
“The council and Sustrans are showing two things number one being their incompetent of doing a job, Number two is they really do want to bankrupt Southport by removing Business one street at a time, many businesses and residents said their objections where never noted down during the first consultations and I too had the same experience, the numbers of people who have engaged with the scheme are small and so the council should show some sort of integrity and scrap the plans, I could get more people to engage with leaving Sefton ! Does that mean Sefton Council would allow it? of course not because they rather Cripple Southport and Fleece it. “

Bankrupts?
Since when does the unelected Tory Lee Durkin represent the entire town?
The same Tory candidate who recently described Damien Moore as a chocolate fireguard.

The anti-cyclist must have calculated that there are more motorists driving through the area, than there are concerned residents living within it....Siding with the former strikes me as little more than a vote-winning exercise - duh!

True but Durkin seeks the vote of the same people who elected Moore.

Does being a chocolate teapot somehow make him think he’s more electable than the other waste of space?

So the thoughts of 115 people decide the arrangements of the roads for 80,000 +
115 clowns like our resident cycling dictator that's a whole asylum full.
Susbenders.

A bit like a minority of the population taking us out of the EU and electing a government.
Your voice doesn't get heard if you don't take part in the consultations.

When will people realise that these things are not dreamed up by somebody in Bootle trying to find a way to P!$$ off the residents of Southport they are and edict from Westminster. Modern Housing Estates are designed not to have 'Rat Runs', you have one or two entrance / exit points and a series of cul-de-sacs all these plans are trying to do is modernise these areas, nobody moans about Ainsdale or Kew because they were designed that way from the onset. Like it or not there will be more of these schemes over the coming years.

To be honest, Salus populi, does all this petty squabbling and point-scoring matter at a time like this?
I believe that all local councillors, who represent North Sefton, should have formed a working group with the sole purpose of really representing North Sefton residents’ interests instead of continually p***ing in the wind, as they have been doing!

Every resident had the opportunity to take part in the consultation. How would a working group take everyone's opinion into consideration?
At the end of the day car journeys have to be reduced so one of the ways of doing that is to make using the car more inconvenient, like it or not. Whether its what the majority want doesn't come into it.

The reality is that North Sefton Councillor’s are a toothless tiger, and they don’t really have any influence on the decisions the Bootle Politburo makes on behalf of the residents of Southport. Sefton Council, run by far left Labour Councillors is a dictatorship, as opposed to the democracy it is supposed to be.

They are hardly far left and they won their majority at the local elections. That is democracy.
