'Sadly' we have poor mobile phone reception here so no point in having a 'Smart' meter (about as 'smart' as 'smart motorways, ie. the complete opposite!).

Smart meters are not for the benefit of the consumer, they are 100% for the benefit of the energy companies. The day will come, not long from now, when the energy companies will be able to see when demand for power is at its highest and charge consumers more at peak demand periods. Want your house warm in winter? That'll cost more. Want to cook Christmas dinner to sit down at 3pm? That'll cost more. Want to watch tv with a cuppa in the evening? That'll cost more.

I also agree with the other poster's comment about charging electric vehicles.

These 'smart' meters are a big con. Avoid them if you can.
