Southport fell agonizingly short of securing a point until Gavin Allott’s header a minute from time secured all three points for the visitors.

Brad Bauress fired Southport into a first half lead but the Pilgrims clawed back in the second half through former-Port forward Jake Wright but it was Allott who carried Boston United over the line with his second-half brace.

Southport were on top in the opening quarter of the first half and were rewarded for their pressure. Jack Sampson weaved his way through the Boston defence, top scorer tapped past George Willis and Bauress was on hand to poke home Port’s 7,000th league goal.

Liam Watson’s side had a number of chances to double their lead before the half with their best opportunity falling to Bauress whose left-footed strike stung the palms of the ‘keeper.

With the wind behind them, Boston United came out firing in the second half. Former-Southport loanee Jake Wright forced Dan Hanford into a brilliant reflex save.

But from the resulting set-piece, the visitors were level. Wright ghosted towards the back post and stabbed home.
Allott got his first of the day when he latched onto Nicky Wroe’s incisive pass and fired across Hanford into the bottom left-corner.
Southport seemed invigorated after falling behind, substitutes Morgan Homson-Smith and Jordan Archer combined, seven minutes after falling behind and drew the hosts level.
The pin-point far post delivery for man of the match, Archer, his looping header sent the fans behind the Jack Carr into raptures.
However, the Pilgrims regained their lead with Allott doubling his tally a minute before stoppage time. His glancing header from Nicky Walker’s free-kick meant the travelling fans were making the 177-mile trip back to York Street with the all-important three points.
