Southport FC can confirm that Dion Charles has completed a transfer to Accrington Stanley.

Dion, who signed for the Port in January 2018 from Fleetwood Town, moves to the SkyBet League One side for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old made 54 league starts during his time at the Pure Stadium, registering 18 goals and picking up the award for the leading scorer last season.

He also scored seven times in cup competitions, including a hat-trick in the Lancashire FA Partners Challenge Trophy Final win against Colne in April.

Dion did not feature in the win over Guiseley at the weekend after the offer from Accrington had been accepted.

Speaking after the game, manager Liam Watson said: “We need to develop our own players, move them on and watch them flourish at a higher level. It’s getting Southport back to what I think we used to be about.

“Over the past season, Dion has matured immensely as a person and he’s worked extremely hard. He deserves the opportunity and it makes my job easier in saying to other players that they could be next in line.

“I’m happy with the players I’ve got. Connor Woods has forced my hand in taking us over the 18-man squad I had wanted and Devarn Green went for a lot of money when he was younger while playing as a striker, so I’m pleased with how our squad looks.

Everyone at Southport would like to thank Dion for his time at the club and wish him every success at Accrington.
