Southport fail to build on their 5-3 win last weekend as Peterborough Sport outplay the hosts on their way to a 3-0 victory at Haig Avenue.

The game started off badly for Southport as after just 46 seconds a long ball over the top saw Sports number 7 Sembie-Ferris calmly take the ball round the keeper and slot the ball into an empty net.

The chances kept coming for Sports and in the 18th minute a volley from Hilliard was narrowly wide of the left post but soon after that came the second goal when another long ball over the top in the 20th minute beat the Southport defence and after a cut back to the back post, who else but Sembie-Ferris tapped in for his second of the game.

The lifeline nearly came in the 44th minute when Connor Woods dribbled through the Sports defence leaving him with a shot at goal but it went straight into the keepers hands.

The second half started much more in Southport’s favour seeing good chances by Woods and Archer go out for corners but the resulting corners came to nothing a theme which seemed to be apparent through the game.

As the game went on Sports seemed to be in behind for a third goal in the 67th minute but the shot by Nicholson was well saved by Mason resulting in a corner.

In the 73rd minute McCammon was brought down in the box giving Sports a penalty however Mason saved the attempt by Sembie-Ferris who was denied a hat trick. Any momentum Southport built from the save was instantly ruled out when Nicholson was played in behind and placed a composed finish into the bottom left corner to give the visitors a well deserved third goal.

After that third goal, the game slowed down and there were few chances for either side.

Southport will need to improve on Tuesday night against Darlington who have started off strong with a win and a draw in their first two games are the visitors to Haig Avenue Kick Off 7.45pm.
