People have voiced their ‘disgust’ after a Merseyside MP failed to back a bid for free school meals for the poorest children over the school holidays and increase the amount paid to people in our region on furlough.
Southport MP Damien Moore voted against a motion that would give people forced out of work by lockdown restrictions to be paid 80% of their incomes, rather than the 67% currently on offer.
Tier 3 restrictions currently cover Liverpool City Region, which includes his constituency.
He also abstained on Labour’s motion calling to extend free school meals for the poorest children across the upcoming half-term holidays in the House of Commons yesterday. The motion fell by 261 votes to 322 – a government majority of 61.
Several other Conservative backbenchers supported the calls for vouchers to be provided, but Mr Moore was not one of them.
Kelly Bond, manager of Ra bar and restaurant in Southport, said she was ‘extremely disappointed’ in her local MP.
She said: “Eighty percent pay made living day to day whilst furloughed ‘doable’. It was by no means ideal but it meant essential bills and rent could be paid.
Disgraceful excuse for an MP. Should hang his head in shame.
Just hanging HIMSELF would be a better option,as he is about as useful an MP than a chocolate teapot would be......Why are the POOREST families NOT getting free school meals ? As it is those families were NO income is that should be given FREE MEALS for their children,or do they want them to starve,as they probably would'nt even get a decent evening meal if their parents have not got enough income.

So I'm at a loss with this government tbh.
Let's not forget the millions that voted for them. They chose to prioritise Brexit and tax cuts over a decent, competent, law-abiding government. This decision to starve children is on Tory voters too.
I speculate that Damien Moore came over from Preston to be the Conservative candidate in 2015 at a time when ambitious Southport resident Conservatives (correctly) did not rate their chances of unseating the incumbent. Those local Tories did not anticipate that John Pugh would decide to stand down before another election; or that BREXIT & Theresa May would throw the general election pattern into overdrive!
I suspect that our Damien as a Preston Councillor had had an ambition for a political career — something he seems to share with his contemporary Conservative MPs, (Ben Bradley perhaps) and some young local Conservatives coming out of the woodwork in advance of the Spring Council elections.
Damien Moore & Ben Bradley
Politics it seems has become, for some youthful ideologues, a career choice (much like joining Aldi) with an entry point and a path of progression. The relationship to voters is to discern their 'hot buttons ', develop an effective PR strategy and suck-up to party backroom operatives who act as the real gatekeepers to the pursuit of a political career.

"Why are the POOREST families NOT getting free school meals"
They do when they're at school
"those families were NO income "
They do have an income, how they spend it is another matter.
"probably would'nt even get a decent evening meal if their parents have not got enough income"
Again they do have money, how they prioritise their money is the problem.
Congrats and all kudos to all the businesses and individual who are supplying meals for these kids. (No, this last comment is not sarcasm)

Waits for the flac
Wondered how long it would take for the tory apologist’s to come crawling out. Pathetic.
There are 4 million kids who were going to depend on schools to provide at least one square meal a day during out of school term time periods. tories have just taken that away.

So, you're saying I'm wrong donkey??
The poorest families don't get free school meals?
They don't get an income?
They don't get an evening meal?
And then I'm congratulating all the families/companies who are going to supply food to those in need during the half term, and yet you want to call me pathetic, strange person......

In my opinion and also the opinion of many health professionals who have just collectively written an open letter of disgust to our very own trump tribute act, yes you are wrong.
The issue is when they are out of school, not when they’re in it. What do you suggest they do at weekends and during the approx 13 weeks of school holidays?
Yes, there may be an income, but not one that is enough to lift these millions of families out of poverty.
No, a lot of these kids aren’t getting an evening meal. https://cpag.org.uk/child-poverty/ch...ts-and-figures
It’s the responsibility of a government to look after its citizens, not individual businesses and people. Pathetic person.

More name calling, as soon as you do that, you've lost your arguement.
"What do you suggest they do at weekends and during the approx 13 weeks of school holidays?"
The same as what I did when I was at school, we didn't have much money, but my parents made sure I didn't go hungry, even if it was only a jam butty.
With my kids. I made sure they didn't go hungry either, by working 4 jobs to put food on the table and a roof over their heads.

Wrong on all counts, it's the responsibility of the parents to look after their family.
Yes, there are some families that need extra help, and I'll never begrudge anyone any money to help them through the hard times, but after being in some of the houses and seeing the TV, Xbox, motorised scooter, etc. Instead of paying £800 for that 55" TV, perhaps a £300 32" TV would have been better, then you'd have an extra £500 to spend on food for the kids.
The more you give to some people, the more they will sit back and do nothing, but take, take, take...

More name calling? Well you lost the argument when you called me strange then.
Kids need a healthy well balanced meal. Not jam butties. Who knows what detrimental effect this could have on their physical and mental health? You can’t even spell the word argument correctly. I rest my case.
