Birkdale Lib Dem councillors Simon Shaw and Iain Brodie Browne have condemned a Conservative council candidate's dishonest claims that they want to "drive new cycle lanes through Birkdale Village".
Earlier this month Tory candidate Lee Durkin made his claims on QLocal, misrepresenting completely what was said in the latest edition of the Lib Dem's 'Birkdale FOCUS'.
"This is all part of the trend led by current US President Donald Trump, that it doesn't matter how distorted and untrue something is," says Councillor Brodie Browne.
"In Birkdale, the Conservatives are trying to out-Trump Donald Trump!"
The article in the Lib Dem FOCUS was just 31 words long, and, in full, read as follows: "Simon and Iain met with the Council's Cycling Officer in September to discuss a possible safe cycle route through Birkdale. 'There would need to be full consultation with residents,' says Iain."
"Nowhere did we mention cycle lanes, and in fact nowhere did we mention Birkdale Village," responded Councillor Simon Shaw.
"I think this really begs the question of why the Tories are opposed to a safe cycle route through Birkdale. Maybe they are happy with cyclists riding on the pavements."
"In a year when local communities have pulled together, it's just so sad that this Tory candidate chooses to completely misrepresent what others have said."
"This is all part of the trend led by current US President Donald Trump, that it doesn't matter how distorted and untrue something is," says Councillor Brodie Browne....."In Birkdale, the Conservatives are trying to out-Trump Donald Trump!"
There's always someone ready to jump on the anti-cycling bandwagon. In this case adopting scaremonger tactics to put down the humble bike. Cyclists have become the group to target, being particularly useful when there's a need to deflect attention from the UK's mishandled Covid crisis.
"In Birkdale, the Conservatives are trying to out-Trump Donald Trump!"
Good to see they put their leaflet that probably hardly anyone reads let alone takes seriously into perspective....not!
It would be nice for them to come out and “welcome” the decision by (to their regular reminders) “Bootle Labour” led Sefton council stepping in on the school meals issue rather than a mayoral candidate and a pcc candidate travelling all the way from South Liverpool for what must be an essential photo-op in pushing plates into an MPs office which will make no difference other than something to put in their campaign literature.

If this highlights anything it's how out of touch and irrelevant the Liberal Democrats are now.
Given the crisis facing our country the best they can find to beef about is cycle lanes.
What's next? Vending machine broken at Birkdale station - commuters left starving due to Tory cuts.

Disagree completely....By coming up with a suggestion to facilitate cycling for exercise during the lockdowns, I'd say they were right on themoney. Which is more than can be said for the other Party, who want to knock this opportunity for exercise on the head!
