Southport begin their defence of the Lancashire FA Partners Challenge Trophy run as they take on Ashton Athletic at the Pure Stadium.

Liam Watson’s side head into the match in great form, having beaten Leamington 4-1 at the weekend.

Wednesday’s second round tie against Ashton will be the start of the Port’s quest to defend the trophy, after lifting the trophy in April.

In their route to last seasons final at the University of Bolton Stadium, the Sandgrounders had to overcome Athletic in the semis.

Paddy Lacey grabbed a double, whilst Jordan Archer was also on the scoresheet in a 3-1 victory.

Ashton also head into this week’s match in good form, after a 4-0 victory away to Squires Gate in the North West Counties Football League.

The Yellows currently sit in 8th place, with 19 points in 11 games, and five behind Longridge Town in third place.

One of their best performances was a 7-1 victory over Litherland.
A player who the Port will have to watch is Dale Korie-Butler, who has 14 goals in all competitions.

Adam Gilchrist has also been in good form, bagging six.

Southport will be hoping to put together another strong run in order to be lifting more silverware at the end of the campaign.
