George Carter a Southport legend
can anyone shed any light on the feats of George Carter, i knew him from our youth when he was a lift attendant for one of the towns major stores, this was just about the only job he could get because he only had one arm,but he overcame his handicap & i am led to believe he became world one arm golf champion on more than one occasion,if this is true he deserves to be recognised as a true Southport legend, people like him should be honoured in the queens birthday list, some may say thats a bit over the top, but many have received honours for much less than George has achieved, incidentally i with my limited knowledge have not been able to find any mention of him on google search.

thank's emily i had forgotten all about that, my pal Alan Ratcliffe had a window cleaning round, & a lot of the lord street shops were his customers, he may well have been the other man.

thanks again Nell, this is terrific stuff, what is most pleasing to me is that a lot more people will be aware of Georges achievements, something else i hadn't realised is that he won the world championships playing against men with only one leg or only one arm which makes the feat even more remarkable because it would be much more difficult to play golf with one arm than it would be with only one leg.

i have just received an e mail from a friend, who now lives in new zealand, but was born in Southport & lived most of her life there, her & her husband were close friends of Georges, & she said he used to go round the schools at christmas handing out presents to all the disabled kids, what a way to treat him now eh?.

I am only just working my way through all these threads, really enjoying them as well.Any way George is a regular customer where I work,in fact he was in only a few days ago.He always buys a ham salad sandwich. He really is such a lovely guy, wish all the customers were so nice.I also remember him when I worked at Richs ice cream parlour many years ago,he was the window cleaner then.

I met George around 1977,i was working at MFI furniture store on Lord Street and he used to clean the windows and polish the floors,a nice guy who would stop and have a chat about football and his beloved golf George had a footballer mate who played for Southport FC at the time and worked with George for a bit of extra cash, his name was Bobby Sibbald and he wasn't a bad full back and was one of the first players to try his luck on the other side of the pond when "Soccer" was starting to take off in the States.....
He played with Pele and George Best for Fort Lauderdale and never picked up a squeegy or wet cloth again!
Birk Daley was born a blue, and this advice he gives to you, keep the faith, and keep up the fight,AND NEVER TRUST THOSE KOPITES!!!
