Your right, it was next door to the Off Licence by the Crossing.. Hmm was it called "Roberts"... Considering I lived in that area for about 14 years, I really should have a much better recollection of the area..

In the early/mid 70s I went to school with a boy who's parents owned the news agents before the crossing. Every couple of weeks or so, both his Mother and Father would have to spend the evening at some convention or similar. I would wait for that phone call giving the all clear single and the off I when. Both him and me would then spend the entire evening raiding the top shelf mags'! What joys to behold. Carefully tumbing through the pages and then skillfully putting them back so nobody including the customers would notice. I dare say that a couple of the pages could well have been stuck together but we firgured that the punters wouldn't be brave enough to bring it back and complain.
This wasn't my first encounters with the pleasures of the Center Fold. You'll have to tune into the Lollipop lady thread to gen' up on that.

No it was further down, number 61 my Mum thinks. No longer a shop.

also as part of this website there is a 360 photo feature which features Upper Aughton Road and other parts of Southport - some really good pics by Roving Eye
What Software is used to make this type of image

There used to be a chip shop on the corner of Matlock Avenue (you could take your basin and have it filled for sixpence) and an off-licence across the road with a separate area for buying booze. Perhaps the shop itself was sweets but I can't really remember.
At the other end of Matlock Road (No. 5) where Richard's shop now is, that was also a sweet shop and I recall getting sweets in two ounces in a little paper triangle. Coupons were still inforce, but not for long.
