Old family Business's in Southport
Just wondering if anyone on here has had a 'family' business in Southport?
My Great Grandfather and my Grandfather had a building business... many years ago... i believe was in Virginia Street.
My family name is Southworth... as was their name.
Wondering if anyone remembers this ??? Or if anyone had a business in Southport long ago???... think they were in Virginia St long before i was born in 1970!!!

I had an aunt who was a great friend of the Southworths. I remember them being actively involved in St Philips Church.
I personally remember Harry Southworth and his two sons Clive and Granville.
Do you think that's really wise?

The world is getting smaller, I too was in the BB with Clive and Granville, my aunt was Betty Hodge, her husband Eddie Hodge was the captain of St Philips BB for many years.
Now you've jogged my memory I do remember Tom Southworth and his father Peter who used to teach me at St Philips sunday school. He was an exceptionally patient man very good with the children, I have fond memories of him.
I remember your family being given the contract to build the Scarisbrick New Rd Baptist Church, ask your father Clive about that. Isn't it strange how these things stick in your mind?

I remember my Dad talking about the firm having the contract to build the baptist church, and i recognise the name Betty Hodge and her husband...is their Daughter Maureen??
Sadly My Grandfather Tom passed away in 1989, and his wife in 2006.
I also seem to remember my Great Grandfather teaching at the Sunday School... altho long before i was born !!! only have distant memories of him however, but remember my Grandmother saying how well liked he was by everyone at St Philips.
What a small world it is indeed

My Aunt's daughter is indeed my cousin Maureen, her son Brian is a professional musician, an extremely talented organist and has produced many of the musical events at the Little Theatre.
Brian still lives in Birkdale and Maureen up in Whalley near Blackburn.

A & F Hames Hill Street
My family also had a joinery and building firm in Southport (Hill St - opposite Rimmers Garage) First established in Southport in 1870's .
Coincidently I went to St Phillips at the same time (1950's) as the Southworths

When Eddie Hodge packed in Tommy Tasker took over as Captain, I remember Eddie Hodge riding one of those Green Corpy BSA Bantams I believe he was a Foreman on the Corporation at Forest Rd Depot.
I too was at St Philips School from 54-61.

You have a good memory Beue Nidle, I remember my Uncle Ed having a motorbike but have no idea what kind it was.
He was indeed a foreman at the corpy, he was also a very devout Christian, I've often wondered how he got on having to listen to all the bad language that must heve inevitably been flying about at the depot. I remember him being a true gent who would do anything for you, he died in 1977.
I was in the BB from about 63 to 66, during the Tom Tasker era. I didn't actually attend St Philip's school, I only went to the Sunday school, I went to Linaker St from about 1956 to 1963.

Miss Gregory, Miss Aldred, wasn't it Mr Sourbutts who followed Pop Rimmer as head. Tommy Tweddle (caretaker) the Wilkinsons who lived over the school (Mr Wilkinson was the Church Verger).
Blimey I'm wracking my brains now.

Yes Keith was a good footballer, once during the summer hols the Vicarage was empty I think it was after Mr Stout left and we used to go and play football on the vicarage lawn. Remember those days when it was sunny in summer and rainy in winter.
