Fleetwood Go Green In Knockout Trophy Success

Kwik Cars sponsored Fleetwood Hesketh moved clear at the top of Group 3 ,in the Liverpool & District Premier League knockout Trophy, after beating newly promoted Colwyn Bay by 6 wickets at Sea Cop.

Fleetwood lost the services of Gary Wells and Paul Mullen last Saturday, but were boosted by their new signing, former Lancashire and England wicketkeeper Warren Hegg and Neil Pike who was taking a break from football.

Fleetwood won the toss and produced one of their best fielding displays for many a season,Hegg even claimed two catches without the gloves on (his first for 20 seasons),as they dismissed the visitors for just 76 in 32 overs, with Colwyn losing their last 8 wickets for just 25 runs as they slipped from 51-2 to 76 all out.

Fleetwoods bowlers were rewarded for their good line & length, with skipper Jon Bowden 4-6 and Paul Green 3-7 bowling great spells as they ripped the heart out of the Welshmen,Neil Rimmer with 1-19 and Bhautik Shukla 1-25 took the other wickets to fall, with Bowden also having a fast hand in the run out of Charlie Clubb, which triggered the start of the Colwyn collapse.

In reply Fleetwood raced to their target for the loss of four wickets in just 16 overs as they tried to increase their run rate in order to qualify for Mondays semi finals, all rounders Paul Green (28) and Neil Rimmer (22) scored the bulk of the runs, before Bowden (8no) finished it off by depositing two consecutive balls over the boundary for four to close on 79-4 and move them to within touching distance of the semi finals, only a huge defeat at Sefton Park (1.30 pm) on Saturday can now deny them.

The second team were involved in a classic match at Colwyn Bay with both teams ending up on 126 all out.

Colwyn won the toss and put Fleetwood into bat and they struggled to 126 all out off 32 overs, skipper Paul Regan top scored with 30 while Danny Murphy scored 28,Fleetwood fought hard in the field and eventually tied the game, with Regan 4-16 and D Murphy 3-33 taking the honours,Murphy even took the last wicket to cap off a fine display, meaning Fleetwood won by having a better run rate after 25 overs,if they can overcome Sefton Park at Sea Cop on Saturday (1.30pm) they too will reach Mondays semi finals.

The third team suffered a heavy defeat at Leigh last Sunday,Leigh were bowled out for 165,in reply Fleetwood's inexperienced batting line up saw them score just 78,only Steve Williams (36) was able to stay and look comfortable at the crease, this Sunday they host Formby thirds at Sea Cop (1.45pm).

Kwik Cars sponsored Fleetwood Hesketh had reason to celebrate a cup double over the Bank holiday weekend, after securing their place in the Liverpool & District Premier League Knockout Trophy Final, after wins over Sefton Park and Wallasey.

The action started on Saturday at Sefton Park, who batted first and scored a respectable 219-7 off their 45 overs, thanks in the main to an opening partnership of 121 between Bellis (69) and Jowett (73),Fleetwoods bowlers shared the wickets, with Steve Rimmer the most cost effective, his 9 overs, only costing 18 runs.
