    2007 Reports

NEWTON le WILLOWS 269 for 3 dec (54.2 overs)
SOUTHPORT TRINITY 185 all out (39.2 overs)

Trinity opened up the 2007 campaign with a disappointing 84 run defeat at Newton le Willows on Saturday.
On a wicket offering little for the bowlers the home side cruised to 269 for 3 before declaring in the 55th over, the wickets shared by Hall, Campbell and Mais.

In reply, Trinity made a disastrous start with all the top order failing as they faltered to 39 for 5 before Dwight Mais plundered the Newton attack for 9 sixes and 6 fours in a brutal innings of 95, adding 93 for the sixth wicket with Shaun Robson (22).

Anthony Hall added a quickfire 20 late on but any chance Trinity had of saving the game was not helped by the usual poor umpiring as the innings came to an end in the 40th over with the total 185.

"The wickets were shared between, Mais, Hall and Camp-Bell" they only got 3 out.
Idiotic, Camp-Bell got 5 runs and rumour has it someone has stolen his bat

SOUTHPORT TRINITY 183 all out (50.4 overs)
PRESTATYN 142 all out (47.2 overs)

Southport Trinity gained their first win of the new season on Saturday with a hard fought 41 run success over Prestatyn at the Rookery.

After winning the toss and batting, Trinity reached 44 without loss with few problems before a mini collapse saw them falter to 48 for 3. Tony Campbell with 26 and an excellent 58 from Wim Van der Walt held the innings together but too many players failed to capitalise on getting starts as another collapse saw the innings come to an abrupt end as Trinity capitulated from 173 for 6 to a disappointing 183 all out.

In reply, the visitors made a bright start before two wickets in an over from the impressive Dwight Mais gave Trinity a lift.

Dave Andrew came on at the other end to give the Welshmen further problems as he ripped out the middle order with an excellent spell of 5 for 40. Mais then claimed two more to leave Prestatyn on the brink of defeat at 98 for 9 but the defiant last pair of Taylor and Williams proved a little harder to shift, adding 44 in 20 overs before the introduction of Mark Foster did the trick, inducing Taylor to pop one up to short leg with just 5 overs in the day remaining.

WIGAN 199 all out (54.4 overs)
SOUTHPORT TRINITY 74 all out (25.4 overs)

A dismal batting performance resulted in an emphatic 125 run defeat at Bull Hey on Saturday as Trinity posted their lowest total since promotion to the Liverpool Competition.

Wigan chose to bat first and looked like posting a big total thanks to 85 from Kiwi Aaron Redmond but after looking well set at 177 for 4, Trinity fought their way back in to the game thanks largely to another impressive spell from Dwight Mais who claimed 5 for 57 from 20 overs to leave the home side all out for 199.

In reply, Foster and Campbell started brightly enough, adding 34 with few problems before the loss of both in successive overs prompted an almighty collapse from which Trinity never recovered.

The innings lasted just 25 overs and is one best forgotten, Trinity all out for a paltry 74.

    LIVERPOOL 223 for 5 dec (50 overs)
SOUTHPORT TRINITY 184 all out (41.4.overs)

Trinity suffered a 39 run defeat at the hands of Liverpool at the Rookery on Saturday but were again left to wonder what might have been if the top order had not failed once more.

After winning the toss and batting,Dwight Mais won the early exchanges with two wickets but Das and Titmuss dug in and swung the game Liverpool's way with a partnership of 146 for the third wicket.

Das went on to make 112 before Mais deservedly claimed his third scalp as the visitors declared after 50 overs with the score 223 for 5.

In reply,it was an all too familiar story for the Rookery men as 60 for 2 quickly became 64 for 7 with the game looking all but lost.

But then an unlikely hero in the form of Jimmy Haynes gave the match an unexpected twist as he proceeded to smash the ball to all parts on his way to a swashbuckling career best 75,he added 60 for the ninth wicket with Colin Maxwell (19) to leave Trinity needing 82 to win with the last pair at the crease.

Last man Anthony Hall then bludgeoned two huge sixes and in next to no time he and Haynes had added another 40 quick runs prompting a few nervous glances towards the scoreboard from the visitors.

But it was not to be as Haynes' mighty effort ended playing an uncharacteristic defensive shot, losing his off stump in the process leaving Trinity all out for 184 and reflecting on another poor show from the top order.

SEFTON PARK 190 for 9 dec (57.1 overs)
    SOUTHPORT TRINITY 131 for 7 (36 overs)

Southport Trinity were once again left to reflect on a missed opportunity to claim their second league success of the season after a rain affected game finished in a disappointing draw at the Rookery.

The visitors chose to bat but were left to rue the decision as Jimmy Haynes rolled back the years with an inspired burst, reducing Sefton from 26 without loss to 49 for 7 including a triple wicket maiden to put the Rookery men fimly in the driver's seat.

But with the game there for the taking, three crucial chances went down as Baird (82) and Poskitt (38) made the most of their good fortune adding 86 precious runs for the eighth wicket as Trinity failed to find a breakthrough.

As the first rain of the day arrived the declaration eventually came at 190 for 9 in the 58th over, Jimmy Haynes taking the bowling honours with fine figures of 6 for 45.

In reply Trinity once again lost early wickets to find themselves 25 for 3 but Wim van der Walt (49) and Simon Cragg (18) steadied the ship before another mini collapse saw Trinity in trouble at 88 for 7.

Another lengthy rain delay put paid to Sefton's chances of an unlikely victory as only another 6 overs were possible after the restart which were negotiated without further trouble as Haynes (28 n.o) and Maxwell managed to secure another bonus point to leave Trinity finishing on 131 for 7.
