Reserve Charity Cup Round 1 at Sandbrook Rd 27.8.08

MUNI FLEX 4 PORTLAND RESERVES 3

Portland Reserves lost out in the first round of the Charity Cup
going down 4-3 after starting the game brightly, but poor defending throughout the game put an early end to any hope of cup glory.

Muni Flex's opening goal was a cracker,a superb twist and turn from their striker and a thunderous strike from 25 yards left keeper Wilkinson helpless as the ball flew into the net,but the three goals that the hosts scored after that where all down to poor defending and a lack of concentration.

Adam Dempsey's fine header from a Martin Moran corner brought the scores level at half time and after a few choice words from manager Daz Taylor the team took to the pitch for the start of the second period in a positive mood.

Portland started well with a couple of efforts on goal from Ross Moonan and Robbie Taylor, but some slack marking gave Muni Flex the chance to get in front when a player met a simple tap in at the near post.

Portland's best player on the night Robbie Taylor then hit back with a thunderous equalizer from 20 yards out, but no sooner had the visitors drawn level they found themselves back behind
when defender Tony Gregson gifted a pass to his opponent who raced away into the area only to be brought down for a penalty
    by debutant keeper Sam Wilkinson.

At 3-2 down Portland where still in with a shout, but poor defending yet again, this time from Adam Dempsey, gave the hosts centre forward a free shot on goal and increased the scoreline to 4-2.

Robbie Taylor scored his second of the night direct from a corner
to bring the score back to 4-3 but Portlands inability to edge in front at any stage of the game meant that Muni Flex where always in control and ended as winners, and with it a place in the second round.

Overall there's room for improvement, keeper Wilkinson made some fine saves and Robbie Taylor played his part, but manager Taylor will still be on the lookout for new recruits as his newly promoted Reserves step up a division this season with plenty of hard games to come.

    Team...Wilkinson,Gregson,Moran,Wright,Dempsey,Rimmer,Sells,R.Taylor,J.Taylor,Misfud,Moonan.
    Subs,Warlow,Corrigan.

Sunday Senior Charity Cup Round 1 31st Aug 2008

    PORTLAND 8 CREAM 1

Portland FC started season 2008/9 with an emphatic 8-1 Charity Cup victory over luckless Cream FC at Bedford Park.

Cream, who where missing several key players, had no answer to
a Portland side that passed the ball around with ease and could well have taken the scoreline into double figures.

Portland gave debut's to Sam Wilkinson,Kyle Cavey and Ross Paskin and all three played a part in this first round demolition job on Mark Galleys frustrated side.

Portland welcomed back from suspension last seasons top marksman Joe Middleton and it soon became apparent that the visitors were in for a torrid time as the striker put early pressure on the defenders with some electrifying runs down the flanks.

The midfield quartet of Aaron Taylor,Craig Taylor,Robbie Taylor,
and Lee Jones ran riot all morning and gave strikers Paskin and
Middleton plenty of the ball early on that should have produced goals.

A handball by a defender in the area started the romp,Middleton converted the spot kick 1-0,Aaron Taylor soon made it 2-0 from
10 yards out before a debut goal by Ross Paskin put the home side in cruise control with the 3-0 scoreline.

A superb free kick from Aaron Taylor just before the break gave Portland a half time cushion of four goals to nil and with it no way back for the visitors.

Portlands 5th goal was the best of the game,a sweet right wing cross from Robbie Taylor was met by Ross Paskin who powered in a full length diving header for the debutant's second goal in Portland shirt.

Robbie Taylor's two goals in mid week for the Reserves had given him the opportunity to show what he could do in the top flight with the first team after the management had called him up,and on this showing he looks here to stay as the robust player linked up well with Craig Taylor in the centre of the park
and marked his first team debut with a goal when he latched on to a Lee Jones pass and steered the ball home.

Two more strikes from Joe Middleton gave the youngster his hat trick and ended a miserable morning for Cream who's only response was a headed goal from a corner in the second period.

Keeper Sam Wilkinson made two smart saves on his debut,Lee Jones was superb on the flanks, and the return of Craig Green at centre back will boost the squad, but a mention to Craig Taylor who probably had his best game in a Portland shirt for some time with a commanding role in the centre of the park.

Neil Wright stood firm at centre back in the absense of "late"
Chris Yewdall and both Simms and Caffrey played their part in an all round team performance.

Substitutes Yewdall and Cavey got a run out replacing Paskin and Simms in the second half.

    Team.Wilkinson,Caffrey,Green,Wright,Simms,Jones,C.Taylor,A.Taylor,R.Taylor,Middleton,Paskin....Subs Yewdall,Cavey.

Sunday Senior Charity Cup...10/09/08 Bedford Park.

    PORTLAND 1 BOOTLE KNOWSLEY 0

For the second year running Portland FC have reached the Semi Final of the Snr Chty Cup to be staged at the end of the season.

This quarter final encounter with Bootle Knowsley was a tough, and at times, some what brutal affair with Portlands younger players coming in for some rough treatment from their opponents that referee Alty seem to be unaware of and only brandished his yellow card once to the visitors.

Bootle started the better of the teams taking control of the midfield in which Anderson and Taylor for Portland struggled to find any early pattern to the game.

Paskin and Middleton where paired together up front and after a
lack lustre opening twenty minutes ,in which the team never got started ,the young strikers put pressure on the visitors defence and tested the keeper with a couple of strikes on goal.

For all their endeavour and rugged approach the visitors never really tested keeper Wilkinson and the half fizzled out with a scoreline level at 0-0.

Portlands second half performance was better, but as much as they tried to get their passing game together they where stopped by challenges that went unpunished by the official.

Portlands breakthrough came mid way through the half when Paskin seized on a loose ball inside the area and drilled home a shot for his fourth goal of the season.

Both keepers where kept busy in the closing stages of the game
as chances fell to strikers from both sides, but Paskins solitary goal was enough to put Portland through and into the hat for the Semi-Final draw.

17 year old Callum Rimmer, drafted in from the Reserves, marked an excellent first team debut that gained him the man of the match award, but with twenty minutes remaining the management took the decision to substitute the youngster after it was apparent that the treatment being dished out to him from one or two opponents was not being punished from the referee
who incredibly only brandished one yellow card for in the second period..........football is a mans game, and players sometimes overstep the mark, this was one occasion when that happened and the referee should have taken the appropriate action,if he had done so the youngster could have enjoyed a full ninety minutes of first team action

Sunday Div 2..........Thursday 11th Sep at Portland St

    Portland Reserves 6 Altcar 0

Night games are always a pain in the butt when it comes to organizing a team, and when manager Daz Taylor got the news that he was missing a few squad members he made a call for reinforcements from the first team...

New kid on the block Ross Paskin answered the call ,and fresh from his Charity Cup encounter the night before he bagged a hat trick in the 6-0 win over Altcar FC.,

Its early season and the squads are still to be finalized with some players having played for both the first team and reserves,
but with several promising youngsters having put pen to paper the season looks promising for both camps....

This was Portlands second meeting in three weeks against Altcar
and the visitors will be glad to see the back of this particular fixture after leaking in 13 goals in the two fixtures without a single reply.

Robbie Taylor,Ross Moonan, and Danny Rimmer also got on the score sheet to give the second string back to back victories......

    Man of the Match......Adam Dempsey.

Sunday Premiership 14 September 08 at Carr Lane..

    SHIP FC 3 PORTLAND 0

After two successive Cup victories Portland arrived at Carr Lane for their opening league fixture in buoyant mood for this tough encounter against one of the divisions consistent performers in Ship FC..

Paul Favengers side are always a well drilled outfit and it was going to take the teams full commitment if the side where going to depart from Carr Lane withs any points on the board..

Portland started the game in bottom gear and never found any
sort of form in a half that was completly dominated by the hosts.

Sam Wilkinson in the Portland goal was easily the best player on the park for the visitors and worked hard to keep his side in the game with some fine saves in the first half and had no chance when Wall struck from close range to open the scoring for the hosts.

Jones, and the Taylor trio of Aaron,Craig, and Robbie struggled to
take any real control of the midfield and both Middleton and Hignett found the going hard up front against a well marshaled defence with Favenger at the helm..

Portlands second half performance was no better and you could count on one hand the efforts on goal from strikers Middleton and Hignett who where starved of any real service all morning

Ship increased their lead when full back Simms failed to challenge Favenger in the area and aloud the defender a free header on goal in which keeper Wilkinson could only watch as the
ball flew past him into the net.

With the game passing so many Portland players by the visitors sent on substitutes D.Taylor,Cavey, and Caffrey to try and stop the rot,but the damage was already done and Paul Graham added a third from the penalty spot for Ship who ran out comfortable winners with a 3-0 scoreline.

Its early days and one or two influential players are yet to make
a start, but those who have already participated in the opening
fixtures may find their shirts worn by someone else if they continue to perform without commitment and passion ,Portland started the game in bottom gear and finished it in reverse!!!!
Some players could do no worse that adopt the same attitude as that shown by Ships Andy Cope who was only named as a substitute on the team sheet but started the game at the last minute and was in thick of the action from start to finish.....

    Team.....Wilkinson,Simms,Green,Yewdall,Wright,Jones,C.Taylor,R.Taylor,A.Taylor,Middleton,Hignett.
    SubsD.Taylor,Caffrey,Cavey.

    PORTLAND 2 BOOTLE KNOWSLEY 2

A draw at home to Bootle Knowsley gave Portland their first point of the season, and after having to start the game with only nine men this result was earned the hard way with the team performing well against all the odds.

Early morning cry-offs,which seems to be the norm nowadays, meant that a threadbare side took to the field and within seconds of the match kicking off the nine men were 1-0 down after poor work from Aaron Taylor let in a player to score with ease..

Portlands early set back seemed to galvanize the side, lone striker Josh Misfud worked his socks off up front and the three man defence of Yewdall,Caffrey, and Simms stood firm and produced some timely tackles against the visitors.

With twenty minutes on the clock gone Portland swelled their ranks to ten players with the arrival of Tom Swift who slotted in to a centre role in a five man midfield, this gave Robbie Taylor a little more freedom to push forward and when he latched onto a loose ball on the edge of the area he unleashed a fierce drive that the keeper failed to handle and the ball nestled into the bottom corner of the net for a well earned equalizer.

The half time break saw the arrival of Dave Instone and with Portland now having the full complement of players they took to the field for the second period in a positive manner and played some neat football without really testing the keeper.

Joe Middleton was seeing plenty of the ball in a wide right position and linked up well with both Paskin and Misfud, but just as it seemed that the hosts had got a grip on the game they fell behind to a sloppy goal after allowing a Bootle player to have a free run on goal.

Bootle could have added a third soon after but missed the opportunity from close range,Paskin then levelled the scores for the second time when he powered in a header from six yards to give Portland a lifeline with the 2-2 scoreline...

As the game drew to a close both Middleton and Instone went close for the hosts but the game ended at 2-2,a scoreline that the management would surely have taken at the kick off.

    Team.....Wilkinson,Caffrey,Yewdall,Simms,A.Taylor,R.Taylor,Swift,Instone,Middleton,Paskin,Misfud.
    No Substitutes Available.

    Sunday Division Two.....

    HARTWOOD 2 PORTLAND RESERVES 3

The Reserves had a good 3-2 away win at Hartwood after starting their game with only nine men,but unlike the first team they managed to go one better with goals from Daz Taylor,Josh Taylor, and Ross Moonan,...they also ended the game with eleven players after late arrivals made up the numbers

    PORTLAND 0 STIRLING ATHLETIC 2

Portland FC are still looking for their first league victory of the 2008/9 season after loosing at home to a much improved Stirling
Athletic side who took their chances in a game in which the home side squandered all of theirs...

Portland started the brighter and had in their ranks plenty of fire power, but after an encouraging opening ten minutes in which both Paskin and Middleton went close,it seemed that the too many of the home side where waiting for something to spark them into life instead of grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck and setting the pace...

Stirling could count themselves unlucky not to have taken an early lead when the Portland defence had to be alert in clearing
a couple of goal bound chances of the line..

Paskin should have done better when through on goal and a Robbie Taylor header from six yards out looked harder to miss than score when the midfielder sneaked in at the far post but could only produce a tame header towards the keeper...

Last seasons top goal scorer Joe Middleton can't buy a goal at the moment, the pacey striker earned a man of the match award
for his efforts with his tireless commitment, but last seasons twenty plus goal machine just needs a slice of luck in front of goal to start the ball rolling...

Portland plugged away in the second half but played into their opponents hands with too many high balls into the penalty area, this was food and drink for Stirlings tall central defenders who lapped up all that was thrown at them all morning...

The opening goal, which was always going to win this encounter,
came through some slack play from the home defence in allowing
a Stirling player to stroll through unmarked and slot his shot past keeper Wilkinson...
Within minutes Portland where two goals down when a simple ball over the top was not dealt with and from the cross a player sneaked in to head past keeper Wilkinson at the far post.....

Portland sent on substitutes Swift and Thompson for Wright and Paskin and went with a three man defence pushing full back Simms into a five man midfield, but although Portland showed more passion with a late rally in which Robbie Taylor should have scored ,it was not to be and on the day Stirling ran out worthy winners...

This was a game that Portland should never have lost having started the better, but they need to see of teams with chances created and be able to keep things tight at the back, otherwise this could turn out to be a long hard season....

    Team.......Wilkinson,Simms,Yewdall,Green,Caffrey,C.Rimmer,R.Taylor,C.Taylor,Wright,Paskin,Middleton.Subs Thompson(Wright)
    Swift(Paskin)

The Reserves had a wasted morning after the Referee deemed the Portland Street pitch unplayable after overnight rain had left its mark on the surface ..........

Sunday Premiership 12/10/08 at Edge Hill .Ormskirk.

    WOODALE 2 PORTLAND 6

Only four games into the season and yet another Sunday morning fiasco with late cry-offs again the talking point as Portland struggled to put out a side for the second time in three weeks...

Only eleven players where available for the short trip to Edge Hill College Ormskirk, and with Portland Reserves only having the same number for their game at Ampro Athletic it could well turn out to be a long hard season for both squads

The return of winger Lee Jones was a bonus for Dave Middletons
side, but with Craig Taylor having to play with a troubled groin injury it was a case of fingers crossed that he could get through the ninety minutes along with his other ten team mates.

Woodale have yet to register a victory this season and it may be a while in coming as last seasons promoted side looked nervous at the back and struggled against the pace and power of both Joe Middleton and Ross Paskin..

Paskin opened the scoring for the visitors when he powered his way through a static defence and scored from close range.

Middleton,Jones,Thompson and Taylor all had the home defence on the rack with good goalscoring opportunities, but for all of Portlands neat forward play it was to be a defender who notched the visitors second goal when Centre Back Derek"Dell Boy" Simms advanced past the half way line and floated a glorious ball high in the air that found its way into the back of the net via a red faced keeper that was caught of his line

Portland played some great football in the first half and should have been five or six goals to the good before Middleton scored
to make it 3-0 after a good cross from the impressive Ian Thompson who ran his marker ragged all morning on the right flank.

With the side 3-0 up at the break, and no substitutes available,
management duo Middleton and Rimmer reminded the players to
let the ball do the work, keep your shape, and the three points would be theirs, but the advice fell on deaf ears with players pushing forward and leaving plenty of the park open, this was playing into the hands of the home side who had no option but to push men forward and scored when a shot deflected of the boot of Simms and past keeper Wilkinson in the Portland goal..

A few choice words from the sidelines and it was back to advantage Portland when Jones made it 4-1 with a neat finish..

Woodale were now dead and buried,Paskin and Jones both scored goals to give themselves a double to give the visitors a convincing 6-1 scoreline before a dubios penalty award gave Woodale a consolation with a late spot kick that ended the game with the score at 6-2 to a shattered Portland eleven that gave their all ..

    Team....Wilkinson,Shirley,Yewdall,Simms,Caffrey,Thompson,C.Taylor,R.Taylor,Jones,Middleton,Paskin.NO SUBS AVAILABLE.

Portland Reserves went down 5-1 at Ampro Athletic with Daz Taylors side only having the bare eleven players.......THe reserves goal came from Adam Dempsey.

Sunday Premiership 19/10/08 at Bedford Park..

    PORTLAND 9 SCARISBRICK HOTEL 1

Portland recorded their highest victory in the Premiership with an emphatic 9-1 victory over Scarisbrick Hotel, and the scoreline may well have reached double figures, but a missed penalty from
striker Joe Middleton kept the score in single figures.

Scarisbrick had a truely miserable morning and where no match for Portlands pacey forward line of Paskin and Middleton.

The match as a contest was as good as over as early as the fifteenth minute when the home side sailed into a three goal lead thanks to two goals from Ross Paskin and one from Joe Middleton.

Middleton weaved his magic all morning and his partnership with
Paskin in now starting to blossom, but any striker will tell you that its all about the supply that you get from other areas of the park and in both Lee Jones and Ian Thompson they certainly got just that with both wingers in fine form on the flanks.

Craig Green returned to the side after missing last weeks 6-2 victory at Ormskirk and replaced the absent Derick Simms who failed to show(party animal! ).
Chris Yewdall partnered Green at the back and put in a steady performance as captain and kept the younger element on their toes with his vocal leadership and organization.

Portlands early dominance gave way to a spirited reply from the visitors who regrouped and tried to make a game of it but failed to test keeper Wilkinson in the Portland goal.

Paskin made it 4-0 with a crisp finish inside the box and completed a fine first half hat trick, his partner in crime Middleton then added his second of the game to give the hosts a comfortable lead at the break with a 5-0 lead.

At 5-0 the game was over, but when the second period started it was the visitors who where first to many of the challenges and their hard work payed off when player manager Jason Meath sneaked into the penalty area unopposed to score with a header from close range.

A few choice words from skipper Yewdall soon had the troops back on track and with Craig Taylor and Robbie Taylor both enjoying the midfield tussle Portland started to find their touch again and added further goals from Middleton's penalty and a Paskin snapshot from the edge of the area.

Portland had played with style and created a great move late on that involved Swift,Thompson, and Paskin in setting up a goal for Craig Taylor who calmly slotted his shot past the helpless keeper from the edge of the penalty area.

Middleton and Paskin had been a thorn in Scarisbricks side all morning and when Middleton found himself clear in the box he was felled by a defender,up stepped Lee Jones to convert the kick that sealed a victory that poor Scarisbrick Hotel will want to forget all about.

    FINAL SCORE 9-1.

    Team.........Wilkinson,Shirley,Green,Yewdall,Swift,Jones,R.Taylor,
    C.Taylor,Thompson,Middleton,Paskin.Sub Caffrey(Shirley)

In Division Two Portland Reserves had manager Daz Taylor pulling out his hair as the second string let at two goal lead slip away in the final minutes..
Leading 3-1 and with thirteen minutes remaining it all looked fine, but their opponents found another gear and came back to win 4-3,a defeat that manager Taylor found hard to take

The reserves goals came from Moonan(2) and Aaron Taylor..
